haha killer advice you recommended there lampdog. being as useful as ever i see. But seriously though just listen to shit around you. Live intruments, records, vhs, mic things up, tape. Really anything. Sometimes you buy records now that you think you have done everything you can with and than 6 months later your like damn i didnt even use this part. Dont be to quick to think ull never use a record/sample. seek II elevate.

hmmmmm best advice you want creative sounds or the ability to have sounds to be creative with.... then get creative with your diggin methods find one place to start and go through their selections rock soul blues classical etc.... then once you have a feel of what your really looking for then go for a bit more of taste rather than know how (you never know you might like it might not) afros bongos hippies sun and beach (chi-lites) skyscrapers most artist will be creative with their covers if they are a bit of a intellectual or very into the art...... a band with a white guy and the rest are brothers COP it chances are he plays the horns or the drums! and must have tythm lol

just be spontaneous, and NEVER I MEAN NEVER THROW AWAY VINYL!!!!!!
give it back to the store or little kids in your fam or neighborhood!

right on lampdog, don't ever sample from just one genre, try to find your own style, you don't need to find all albums from the same genre, but certain sounds that are the sample. For example maybe all xlyophones, strings, etc.

Seek out Open Sounds........................

(sounds Isolated or Solo or Almost Solo......Intros, Outro, Breaks, Bridges etc...are gud starting point)

Just find some dollar bins and try a wide variety of stuff. You can't beat a whole album for a dollar. Just make sure its not too scratched. You'll be surprised. Try every decade, genre, artist, etc.. For a buck you don't need to have any inhibitions. Also don't be afraid to throw something into your sampler. Some samples sound great on record but may not in your beat, others may sound only ok on record but with the right drums and other sound might bang. Have fun.

I can say, like everyone else here, it takes skill to dig. when you compare to someone else who has years on you, it's going to get frustrating. Get your hands on everything. Find the cheapest place around and just spend like $10 every now and then. Even now that i know what i like, i have this thing where i got to this shop with 50 cent records. I spend $5, no more, no less and the purpose is just to expose myself to new things. Since i do it on that budget, i still dig hard, i will put a 50 cent record back more than a few times, even though it's not going to set me back. Having a bunch of shitty records suck.

Pay attention to the producers, the genre, the years, the artists, the types of instruments, or anything else. Usually, if diligent, you will actually get signifiacatnly better at finding what you want and have a good idea of what you are buying, even if you haven't every heard the artist, album, etc. And you may find a bunch of the stuff you bought 2-3 years ago that you passed up is now perfect for you. I find more gems in my collection now than i do at the store when i actually take the time to go through it.

Lastly, just realize how critical digging is. So many people say "I can flip everything" and have a bunch of songs that are chopped well but the original source is wack. It's just showing of technical skill, not making something dope. If you have to wait 2 months to find that dope sample that really seperates that song from your normal music, you need to figure out how to find that source consistently.

b. Hire musicians to replay samples how you want them

nah but seriously, if you can find a sample that sounds dope but has crap ruining it (ie. dope bass/piano/drums but s*** synth or something), try to replay it if you can. There are some .MIDI files of songs available on the net too. Also, listen to entire records, or at least skim through multiple sections of a song before going on to the next track. Some of the illest sounds can be in the middle of an otherwise wack track...and then most likely they've never been used before too
