mono recording in MPC 60...what am I doing wrong?!

I'm new to this so please help me out...

I'm trying to record mono samples into my MPC 60. However, the signal coming in sounds messed up...the volume level of the instruments in the center of the mix (i.e. bass, vocals, etc,) is greatly reduced. I've tried changing the mono/stereo zone switch on the back of my mixer, but in both positions I'm getting the same signal.What I've been doing so far to avoid this is panning my mixer to one side...that seems to give me a balanced signal.

Is this the normal way to do it? I'm worried that I'm not getting the best signal.

That's what I've been doing and that gives me a balanced signal (as far as I can tell), but is that the way mono sampling into the 60 is normally done? I just read somewhere about a guy who had the exact same problem and it turned out that he was inputting a stereo 1/4" jack instead of a mono one. Changing to a 1/4" mono supposedly solved his problem so I'll give that a try. I just find it strange that nowhere in the manual is that detail mentioned...

What I do is I have a Y cable and I plug the one side in the mono input of the 60 and the other two come from the outs on mixer. Then I just pan right or left and I can sample just fine. Very easy for me.
