Headaches! - Syncing OS2 with reason, diagnosis...

whats crackin homies,

here's the score....

ok i'm trying to sync my mpc1000 with reason,

i open reason, select my modules i want to use i.e. thor, malstrom etc.

all midi settings are correct

but!...

for track 1 i select midi channel 1A on mpc, then assign module (thor) in reason to 1A. - WORKS FINE.

when i go to track 2, and select midi channel 2A on mpc, and then assign a different module (malstrom) to midi channel 2A - again works fine.

it is when i go back to track 1 and record my performance into mpc's sequencer, track 1 plays both modules (thor and malstrom together), when it should only play thor, cuz that module is assigned to midi channel 1A!!!

i wanted my sounds from thor on track 1 and malstrom on track 2. i've tried everything, it's really startin to fuk wit my head, sparqs video is helpful but it's not very in-depth,

any of you guys out there using reason as a sound module successfully?

i've tried in both OS1 and 2 but it ain't happnin.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE MULTIPLE MODULES IN REASON WHEN SEQUENCING WITH MPC?

any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

set each instrument to have its own channel in Reason
sequence them from respective tracks and respective channels in jjos
if/when all else fails, go to your TRACK LIST in Reason and look to the far LEFT
make sure that none of the instruments is HILIGHTED (focus) because it will interpret all incoming midi signals as if they're meant to be playing that item.

and just for future reference, what you are doing doesn't involve any syncing. syncing involves the clocks.

a true 'sync' wouldn't be possible between the MPC and Reason because Reason doesn't output any MIDI, only receives it (I think).

i use 3.0 and yes Reason can only be a slave as far as im aware (unless ive missed something). unsure about 4 tho

and yes its properly the "focus" highlighted instrument in reason i had the same trouble before.

Note: you can set the keyboard input in Reason's MIDI preferences to something other than the mpc is connected to and have it play modules by using the MIDI bus inputs in the Advanced MIDI page.

There should still be a nice video out there made by someone from this forum (youtube) on how to do so.

i was FURIOUS, not understanding why the hell that was happening until i saw that little hilight around a combinator and i was like...aw, dammit

it's cuz they think that by default most users will be using just reason, or just reason + midi controller, that's why there's that whole track focus thing.

i think there's an option in control devices in the prefs page (don't you love/hate how simple reason's pref page is?) ratherr there are 2 options. the top one is on by default. the bottom one makes it so that track focus plays less of a part in playback. select that one.

also, consider running reason through a daw via rewire. though it can at first be twiddly to set up, once you do it you get to start REALLY seeing reason's power. i have reason/reaper hooked up together and i tell you, it opens up whole other worlds as far as routing, sound effects, midi effects (arpeggiators, duration controllers, cc riders/smoothers/lfos/translators etc etc etc etc)

reason's nice cuz it's both simple and complex
doesn't often get in its own way.

i'm tracking my mpc sounds into sonar 7 and using rewire to track reason into it also, its pretty dope if you ask me, i think the set-up i have is actually quite powerful considering my limitation of equipment, (i have no hardware synth or studio mixer yet).

have you tried tracking reason to an audio track in OS 2 yet?

yes, actually, i love to do that when i "go portable" and don't have my reason sounds right at hand.

also, i very often use INST pgms as layers for my reason sounds. i do most of my composing away from DAW, so ill use some of my inst pgms to get general sounds i want, lfos, channel pressure etc. then i'll get home and i'll drop an outgoing midi channel on that inst track and use reason to add another layer.

i find this VERY very powerful, i sculpted a flute+choral+synth instrument using a combinator and a patch from those kurzweil inst pgms i upped a while back. result - sounds JUST like a muffled sample of a woman singing. using channel pressure routed to the filter of the INST pgm and also to the Mod Wheel of the combinator (which in turn is routed to the LFO and the filter of the combinator), i have such control over the woman's warble and intonation.

super powerful. it will be a LONG time before i feel like i need a new module
every time i feel like "Aw reason ain't enough" i learn a little more about midi and i'm like wait a minute...give me another year with this program.
