Ok recently I cut off my right arm (sold my MPC 1000). I was (and still want to continue to use) a two sampler setup (2500 and 1000) but the 1000 has far too many features that i dont need now with the release of JJOS2. Basically i had a two sampler setup because I would use the mpc 1000 to set up a midi sequence or record a sample into the mpc and then add run the recorded sample into my effects chain (reverb delay compression etc.) and into my mpc 2500 where i would then edit the sample etc.

So what i need is just a cheap alternative to the mpc 1000. Something where i can sample into then send it to my efx chain and into my mpc 2500. It doesnt have to be feature laden or extensive, LCD would be nice but not require. I do need it to be able to record midi notes so i can send it into my synth etc. So midi out is a must, that way i dont have to use a keyboard controller all the time i can just load the notes into the sampler and hook it up to my nord 2x where i can tweak without have to play the keyboard constantly.

I looked at the akai S20 but not sure if it can do what i want it to do (ie the midi part). Someone recommended me the Yamaha SU200 but that doesnt have midi out.

Anyother suggestions or will the S20 be able to handle it?

price range is under 200 USD. Also thought about an mpc 500 but the price is more than what i want to pay for when im not going to be doing any extensive editing and sequencing on it. Just record into and set up some midi thats pretty much it.

as i dont really need to save anything on it as ill just be using the ram

so it can be a floppy, quarter inch, cf card, etc. doensnt matter as i will hardly be saving (well just mainly saving the midi portion.

I don't understand why you would need that kind of workflow if you have a 2500...

Anyway, the S20 does not have a real sequencer. It can respond to MIDI notes, and the buttons can send out MIDI notes, but I'm not sure it can record notes to play back later (although I have one  ).

because the way i have it set up is

all of my equipment going into my mixer (and my mpc 2500), for example say i have my korg micro x into channel one (i use mono most of the time). so i play a phrase i like and am ready to record it into my mpc.

so i have to hit mute on channel one this routes the sound into my alt outs on my mackie onyx and into all of my compressors and efx etc and then into my mpc 2500. (its kinda hard to explain)

so if i had say a .wav of a drum hit (snare bass whatever) if i assign it to one of the pads on my mpc 2500 and then say oh i want compression on it, if i hit mute on the mpc 2500 channel and then mode + record on the mpc its gonna feedback like hell because its a continous loop of sound going out of the mpc and being recorded back into the mpc.

Yes, I see that. I just thought people preferred to have their effects on the way out of the MPC, and sample them dry first.

i knew i shouldnt have gotten rid of my 1000

akai s1000, it samples the same bit rate as the mpc 1k and you can find them for $100 or so. i just sold mine for $75 a few weeks ago.

on the s1000 can you assign midi notes to the buttons and then record a sequence of just midi?

No, you cannot do that with with any of the S series samplers...

sigh back to the drawing board

i think i might just end up getting an mpc 500 at least i know it can do that

Well, if you really need something that can record MIDI sequences, then that's hard to find in that price range. Only other thing I can think of are the Roland MC series, but they go for about as much as an MPC as well.

yea im not trying to spend crazy money when im only going to be using it for a couple of things.

i think the mpc500 might be my only option for a low price item but then again those usually go for 300-400 ehhh.

You might be able to find an Emu IV, 5000, 6400, Esynth, etc for around that price. They have a bare bones sequencer that you could record stuff with.

Kurzweil 2000s and 2000rs are also becoming cheaper, but would be more than $200 most likely.
