JJ responds to user input, and possibly, constructive critisism could go a long way - calling it retarded seems harsh at this stage.

I am using OS2 like many others around here. Calling it retarded is constructive critisism. Just because we are getting an "unofficial" OS (which we paid for by the way) with increased support, we do not have to turn this forum into a JJ love-fest anymore than the MPC 1000 forum has to turn that respective forum into an Akai love-fest.

The truth is that the JJ OS2 has a long way to go and needs to be streamlined more. It feels like a scratch pad..work in progress. There is nothing wrong with reporting that. I am not swayed by the scare tactics of support JJ or there will be no further development of these latest MPCs. In fact, these MPCs can stay exactly the way they are..even with the Akai OS. I have much more tools in my arsenal that do a better job than any MPC OS at numerous tasks. So the added MPC features are a bonus but far from necessary.

My two cents...and I am out.

From wiki..
Constructive criticism is a compassionate attitude towards the person qualified for criticism. Having higher experience, gifts, respect, knowledge in specific field and being able to verbally convince at the same time, this person is intending to uplift the other person materially, morally, emotionally or spiritually. For high probability in succeeding his compassionate criticism the critic has to be in some kind of healthy personal relationship with the other one, which is normally a parent to child, friend to friend, teacher to student, spouse to spouse or any kind of recognized authority in specific field. Hence the word constructive is used so that something is created or visible outcome generated rather than the opposite.

There can be tension between constructive and useful criticism; for instance, a critic might usefully help an individual artist to recognize what is poor or slapdash in their body of work—but the critic may have to appear harsh and judgmental in order to state this. But useful criticism is a practical part of constructive criticism.

I cant seem to work into that calling something 'retarded'..

"If it works for you, that's awesome."

There ya go, best statement ever. I predict most people won't understand OS-2. I barely heard any beats with OS-1 on here, and I bet we'll hear even less with OS-2. haha
This topic doesn't need to get any deeper than this tho. If you like it, then that's just great. OS-2 gets the gas face from me tho. :)

"It feels like a scratch pad..work in progress. There is nothing wrong with reporting that."

Good point. I've found "from listening" that there are very few people that really use their MPC's like it's suppose to be used. Most care about bugs, but they care more about addition features. I've yet to hear a beat on this site that shows what OS-2 can really do, in all honestly, I haven't heard a beat on a 4000 that convinced me to upgrade! The truth is, the main function of a drum machine is to organize drum/samples to create a melody. There is nothing complicated with that, but if the OS interferes with the progress, something is wrong. Myself, I've been making beats now for 8 years and I've used all the MPC's but OS-2 doesn't make me want to turn the MPC on! I'm so glad 5.53 is stable. We all reemember OS-1 when it was seriously buggy; I almost went back to the 2000XL!
Some people like it, some people hate it, this is clear, but I really think the people that don't care about it need to be addresses. There shouldn't be decent amount of people that don't like the OS.. we ALL bought it with good intentions.
And where is the velocity? It's on EVERY MPC's main screen. Now I suddenly have to read a manual to do something as simple as that? 8 years later, and I have to read a manual to do that?? Come on jj.. If anyone is confused with MPC's or OS-1, OS-2 will cause an aneurism. It makes the 2500 almost a completely different machine.

Ive been using os2 since when it came out for the 1000 ,and for the first few weeks i was switching back and forth, hitting the wrong buttons in os2 more often than not etc etc, now its the other way round. As of only a few days ago Os2 feels more comfortable now than os1..not for everything..but for most everyday things it is just as quick, and will eventually be for much of the other stuff, especially with positive input. If you want new features its obvious that you'll have to adjust slightly, if your not intersted in new features then... whats the problem if you already have os1?

also track velocity was always a work around.. one that people (including myself) have got so used to its weird without it... but really velocity should be for controlling the variation between notes, not as a cheap track volume.whats the point of even having velocity layers if when you want to adjust the "volume" of a track you also adjust the tone of the sounds?Tone and Volume should be independant and now they are..

interesting discussion,

I'm a bit behind and only just installed 5.53 (jjos1)

would you guys recommend waiting until a better version o2 comes out or just get it and learn it to keep up with future releases?

it's entirely up to you, depending on what features you're after. if there's some features you really need on os2, then install it and get familiar with it. if os1 is keeping you satisfied, learn that first, then move on to os2 when you feel ready. the workflow is similar, yet different. so it may get a bit confusing being new to the jj os, going back and forth between os1 and os2.
it's your choice. compare the features between both and let that be the deciding factor of where to start.

I have upgraded to os2 .....I like the non destructive editing ....some features are fresh some aint my cup of tea....

if jj could figure out away for os2 pgm's to be compatible with battery 3 like the 2000xl pgms are I would probably use it a hell of a lot more

that way I could just sequence in the mpc and dump the program in battery and the midi file in logic and pow! my beat is in the daw

I bought Battery 3 when it was released because of it's advertised compatibility with MPC programs. When I tried to load MPC 2500 programs (Akai OS) into Battery 3, it crashed the program. I reported this to Native Instruments years ago but I haven't heard whether they finally added this feature...

NI fixed the problem with pgm's crashing the program with their update but thats only for the mpc 2000xl as it says on their website now ......but with this new ni update it wont even let me load the 2500 pgm....... I know this aint an issue with jj .....but dam that would be sure cool to have all your chops that you just layed out on your mpc loaded into battery with all the mute groups set up and the adsr settings all set up and ready to go!

maybe I m dreaming ....oh well!

roxstar wrote:I agree with KV. Spec wise, it sounds great, but I like using OS-1 A LOT more! Going from Akai to JJ wasn't too bad.. actually it was pretty east to convert, and after a few days, the JJ OS felt even better than the original. I don't get the same feeling between OS-1 and 2. There are lots of drum machines out there that do more than the MPC does, but the MAIN reason people use MPC's is because of the ease of use, not the many functions it can do. Don't get me wrong, i like the idea of doing more, but JJ needs to make things a lot easier to use. OS-2 reminds me of my ASR-X. So many parameters and pages of info. I swear I've seen about 4 different screens that allow you to tune a sample..they all do the same thing! Half the time I make adjustments and hear nothing. Non destructive editing, Nice, ASDR, great. Put this on OS-1, clean up any bugs, and I swear I won't have a need to upgrade this OS ever again. I'm quite sure my Flash ROM is getting tired of the constant changes! haha

i agree.

Please tell me if I'm missing something, but why would anyone with an MPC 2500 need battery as well?
I use battery but thats because I use a classic 2k which doesn't have mute groups etc.

I don't know where you learned about "Constructive Criticism", but calling something retarded is never a good example of it...
