Insight, What Do You Guys Look For

whats poppin, im just trying to get some insight you know, im new the digging, im just wondering, what you guys look for in a record, meaning like year, label that kinda stuff.

im starting to go to the record stores, but most of the stuff i bring home is waack lol or its already been done.

For starters
IMO--- >
Year: '68 - '79
Label -- Anything on Stax Label (Finger snapping with Stax name on top)
Type: Soulful, Anything Motown or motownish, anything pleasing to the ear.
(you should collect music that you enjoy listening to), also try different genres

As you start out, picking up basura records is gonna happen more often than not. Most people who start out diggin' without a collection of gems already handed to them pick wack stuff. The good news is the more you dig, the more you'll automatcally come to know what to definitely cop, or take a chance on. To this day I still pick duds, but my personal rules are:

1. Artist i'm familiar with that had gems on other LPs
2. Anybody rocking a afro and 70's clothes (white boys included)
3. Label and/or year of an LP
4. A drummer rocking a drum set on the front cover
5. Artist who have been sampled already to make something hot
6. Those few pieces that I've heard/saw that had breaks/samples I don't have, but want
7. Soundtrack or weird sh*t that looks interesting
8. Cover art

listen to old radio stations and listen to what they play get an ear for the music you like then go out and look for it on vinyl then refer to DBA list.

mostly look for stuff you you and like then again you have to knnow alot of music not just rap....there's other music out there then rap music....open your mind to other music is the main key!!!!!

really, i think it's personal preference. bring home what you'll think is good and you'll be able to work with. bring home something that you think you'll be able to work with. For me, imma look for soul, jazz, good drums, etc. find out who your favorite beatmakers sample, and try to find those same people or people closely related.

Look for CTI, MOTOWN and all kinds of strange random shit and IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRON MAN COMPETITION HOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

i know dre use to sample alot of funk, and premo, hes my all time fav, iv been trying to get a premo type sample lol, but i end up with CRAAAAP lol

create your own style ....listen to what you like don't follow someone else's that why your in that situation now...find music you like thats the key

To quote my favourite record store owner when another customer asked me "what do you like?"

"anything that sounds good...even if it's only four seconds"

No rules really...

imitate premo until u get good then develop ur own style

record labels- stax, cti, blue note, fantasy, polydor, rca victor is usually good altho i have got a couple duds on that one (w the rca bubble letters on the side and victor on the right side)

look for producers, even im sleepin on this, i dont kno many.

instrumentation - exotic instruments besides guitar bass drums. flute, synths, horns, strings ect

cover art - anything trippy looking, people with afros

years - '69 to '73

thats all i can think of rite now. of course not everhthing applys to this, this is just my thing i look at if im debating whether to cop or not. it all starts with the cover art tho, once that looks like fire i read about the rest.

remember finding the sample is only half the equation, flipping it to something dope is on you.
