Hi,

I've been lurking for the past 2 weeks and learning a bit thanks to everyone. I've got my first question: Ghost hits, where do you like to place them? I'm having trouble making them sound natural. I'm also tempted to call up a drummer friend and sample his kick drum pedal's squeak. Anybody else try that?

Anyway, thanks again.

Welcome.

Sampling stuff as the pedal squeek is a good idea, always be creative, thats what a sampler is for.
While you are at it ask the drummer where he places his ghost notes.. theres no general rule about this, listen to records you like and try to analyse.
I often make ghost hits from the same main sample by pitching (slightly) up or down, removing some of the attack (with the attack parameter or by adjusting the sample start) and filtering (little lp or sometimes bp). Make some copies slightly different, experiment and you should be fine.
If you have a drumset (and a decent room) you could also sample softer hits played by a drummer and use that.

ghosts notes are usually lower in volume than the original snare hits on the 2 and 4.

Ghost notes usually come on the 2nd or 4th 16th notes of a beat.

1 (|) | | 2 | | (|) 3 (|) | | 4 | | (|) 1

the numbers are the beats and the | are the 16th notes inbetween the beats.

The ( ) are where ghost notes usually go. of course these arent rules this is just what you will usually hear. Of course you probly wouldnt put a ghost note everywhere I have up there, those are just the most common spots that you will find them.

Also listen to records and listen to the drummer to see where they put theirs usually.
