EXTERNAL HARDDISK FOR MPC 2000???

hello everybody! i got a problem with my mpc2000. i bought it a few days ago and, of course, i spent the first night digging in the crates, chopping samples and saving them to floppy disk. but when i first tried to load them from disk, most of the files were damaged. its the same problem with the system disk, the mpc says disk error or no system file (or sometimes just nothing) very very often. sometimes i have to start it up to 20 times until it is able to load the system. so i'm searching for an alternative to that floppy bullshit, and i think an external scsi harddisk should be the best solution. can anybody please tell me: 1. if there are still external scsi harddisks to buy 2. which models are compatible with the mpc2000 3. which one is "the best" (maybe someone has got one himself) 4. where i can buy it (vienna, austria??) and how much it might cost. peace

An external hard drive is good. Faster than flash. More space at once. You can split the HD into nine 1GB partitions. CF is good to, but I don't like the idea of portable CF for some reason.

It was the answer to the original poster's question.

replace the floppy you can get one dirt cheap. scsi stuff can easily be bought on ebay (zips jaz drives etc..). keep in mind that the 2000 will only read up to a 9 gig drive. if you have some basic pc building knowledge than you should be able to get some scsi stuff working on your mpc pretty easy.

If the 2000 has an external SCSI port, I believe you can also connect an external SCSI card reader.

a CF solution would mean no moving parts , no heating, unlimited storage , no need to deal with partitions...
just swap the compact flash card from reader to PC / Mac ... can't go wrong

We have an internal CF card reader for the MPC2000 or MPC2000XL and it's about $100 - the MCDISK-2. Granted, it isn't beautiful once installed but it does the job and has two PCMCIA slots. You can see it on our website.

The only 100$ I see is external. The internal version is 175$. Why is it more expensive? Considering it doesn't have an enclosure, I would think it to be cheaper.

The MCDISK-2 can be removed from its external case and mounted internally into many samplers, including most Akai samplers. If you look at the Details page for the MCDISK-2, you'll see pictures of how it looks out of the external case and even what it looks like mounted inside some people's samplers.

I dont think the 2000 classic has an internal SCSI connector, to attach a ribbon cable you have to solder the individual pins to the inside of the external out.

It isn't that hard to put a card reader drive into an MPC2000 - you just need to disconnect the cable that runs to the rear external port and instead plug in the ribbon cable we supply. That will mean the rear SCSI port no longer works; if you want to keep that port working and have an internal card reader, you must obtain a cable that has both internal and external SCSI connectors. We can tell you where to get such a cable. One of the nice things about the MCDISK-2 inner drive is that it is the exact size of a floppy drive and even has a floppy power connector, so it is an easy connection.

The only drawback to the MCDISK-2 installed like that is that it has no faceplate, so it looks a bit funny (as you can see in the user pictures). It is possible to fashion a faceplate out of the external case front; we have done it and either can do it for you or, if you are a bit handy with a jigsaw, you can do it yourself.
