i'm digging thru the manual, and i still can't figure out a way to use the mpc's LFO's to control kore2.

here's what i'm trying to do:

kore2 has a bunch of patches of it's own. aside from all the stuff that comes w/komplete. kore2 doesn't seem to have it's own LFO. i can use the q-link to control kore2 via midi learn. i need my q-link to be sync'd. i don't want to start twisting knobs, messing w/the faders, then go back and edit in order to make things smoother, and sound sync'd.

is there a way to use the LFO to control the q-link, so the q-link can control kore2??? i can't find anything in the mod matrix that would allow me to route the LFO externally. i can't find anything in the mod matrix that would allow me to use the LFO to modulate q-link values. i've tried playing the midi i/o routing on the main page. still nothing.

there has to be way to do this... i want to avoid having to sample into emulator in order to use some LFO's.

To go out on a limb my understanding of program matrix is to control the internal sampler program parameter of 4k only not for setting up for external gear.

Now the qlink is just that a controller knobs and sliders that can be linked to external gear as most midi controllers function the same way.

Two things you should do in my book.

First to recieve in LFO I think you first need to check if KORE can receive LFO modulation in your KORE manual as Source from an external modulation.

Second you may have to set up some systax librarian that might allow you to access those parameters on the 4k. That would be advanced midi setups that McSmooth or others may know about. I couldn`t tell you know to set it up.

Till then I would say that trying to do it the way you want is a no go. As is isn`t a regular midi controller but a modulation function within sampler or synth that can be controlled by a controller. But a Lfo isn`t usually a controller itself more of a modulater (influencing amp, filter,and pitch) which is controlled by mod wheel, key pressure, knob, or slider get it.

I've never needed my 4k's LFO's to control any external synths, as all my external synths all
have multiple LFO's.

But you could probably simulate an LFO with Q-Link Sequence, and Q-Links can
be set to send Midi CC.


here's what you could do with Q-Link:

1. In Q-Link, hit F2 to "Send"
2. In Send Change to Control Change
3. Give Control Change the midi cc number between 0 - 127 that you were going to
have the lfo transmit that your kore2 is set to recieve on.
4. Go to Main Menu, and set your Track to Midi OUt and the Port and Channel that you
are connected to kore2
5. Turn your Q-Link knob that you set the Midi Control number for and verify it is changing the
parameter on kore2 that you were expecting.
6. Go to Q-Link Seuqence and dial in some changes
7 If you want to see what typical lfo waveforms look like, check here:

Dial in with the knobs so that it generally looks like the diagram.
8. Make sure you turn on the Q-link Sequence button on the MPC itself as well as actual Q-Link sequence itself in the Q-Link Sequence screen itself

And of course all of your LFO's outputs will be midi clocked in the 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 that you set
the Q-Link Sequence to run.

and now you have simulated an LFO waveform with a step sequencer (Q-link Sequence) and
are sending the values out via a specificed midi cc number on a specified midi channel

If you want to get really tricky, you can use the additional tracksend on the Track Send, to send
this to an internal program/part, and in that Program use the Program Modulation Matrix to set up the same Midi CC that you set in the Q-Link Send section to something like Filter cutoff or what not.
And then an internal Program and your Kore2 will respond to the same simulated lfo Q-Link Sequence output.


You can do the same type of thing with a modular synth... that's what I love about the 4000... too bad Akai never understood or realised the power within .... ;)

You can also turn on and off the lfo at will using the Q-Link Sequence button on the 4k itself.
A great live performance effect.

Nice post Dave. 8) Using the 4k sequencer as an automater.

Plus he could simply use the built in lfos in Kore itself.

renegade, that's what i have always done before... use the vst's lfo's do do what i want. but kore2 doesn't have an assignable LFO for me to work with. but now there is a plot twist!

after messing w/kore some more, i found an extra screen that i wasn't seeing before. actually i found it because i changed my screen res from 1027x768 to 1280x960. doing this really opened up the middle section (sound matrix) of kore2. turns out what i thought were patches that only existed inside of kore2 are actually from the VST's like all the other patches. so now i can just go into the vst and work in there with out having to figure out how to use the mpc's LFO. don't have to sample, or do my wannabe automation (like renegade suggested) anymore. actually in the past i was using the q-link knob to do more sine wave stuff, and slider for square/triangle/saw and some random stuff, and then cleaning it up in the seq edit screen. haven't tried using the q-link sequence.

like i mentioned before, kore2 doesn't have any assignable LFO. in the hard copy of the manual, there's is mention of any LFO in the index. if you search the pdf version of the manual, it only mentions LFO's when talking about chorus, temolo, mod delay, and couple of other FX. nothing you can use to actually tweak a patch. thanks for pointing out that i could use kore's built lfo, if such a thing was actually available. ;)

I don`t use Kore 2 but I do use Battery 3 by the same company and its sister spin-off Ableton too. I have alot of software synths and soft samplers cuz I do alot in my DAW. What does all of this means it that I believe whole hearted that Kore does have assignable lfo within the modulation view tab or whatever it is called on Kore 2. I don`t have the manual, but most Native Instrument product do come with helpful videos I think you might find your answer in the automation or setup menu to use a midi control. Hell even the Kore unit itself comes with a controller. It`s in there you bluempc4k but you got to search for it.

So I`m going to move this to MPC studio treads and some experienced Kore 2 user can maybe show you the way to find it.

But I`m willing to bet it is in their somewhere in the modulation page. :idea:

thanks for the move. i hope it will help. but i still can't help to feel disappointed because i wasn't able to do what i wanted to do from the mpc. :(...

i can try to dive into the sysex, and see what happens. i'm just glad i can still go into a vst, and do what i want in there.

Dude I was just watching the Kore 2 video on Native site the second video on sound design. It seems just like battery click the learn button, click on the knob or slider in the software program you want to control, move your 4k controller you will use, and click learn again and it is finish. This worked with Kore and third-party software check it out. I`m thinking of getting Kore 2 too as I`m impressed with their inventory and battery is cool to design the sounds. If you want the cycle robin function too with effects no need for a 5k (by the way Battery had that function first). It is in their check out the tutorial videos watch and learn those help me with battery cuz reading can be difficult and boring when it is too technical.

i'm familiar w/the midi learn function.

what i was trying to say or do was to make those 8 knobs you see on the top (the knobs that correspond to the kore controler) move to an LFO. or atleast get the mpc's LFO to modulate my q-link to make it send CC data in a way that mimics a sine wave, or what ever wave i choose in sync'ed manner. problem one: i can not make the mpc send CC's in sync'd manner. i have to use the q-link sequence which ends up sounding rougher, kinda stepped... or draw in the automation, and spend time tweaking it to get it to sound the way i want it to sound. problem 2: kore it self doesn't have it's own LFO that you can assign to anything.

and since all the sounds are infact coming from a vst, or a combination of vst's... i don't need to figure out how to get mpc to do what i want, or make kore it self do what i want. i can just go into the vst and tweak like i normally do.


but i still recommend getting kore. i have komplete 3, 4, and 5. i love being able to use kore to search for patches. i also like the effects, and the sound design possiblities. hell, this thing was actually my first host. before i even messed w/a daw i was into kore. it plays well w/the mpc. but kore will crash if you are playing a sequence from the mpc, and start loading vst's or change sounds. make sure you stop the mpc first before you start loading vst's.

so far, the only thing i don't like is that kore sums everything. say you want to use 2 kontakt instruments. if you open both instruments inside of kontakt, the output of both instruments will get summed in kore, even thos kontakt has multi outs. you have to open up multiple instances to keep everything separate.

oh, and another thing i don't like is that kore only uses one cpu core. there's no way to tell it make use of multiple cores like a daw. so if you go crazy w/massive, and reaktor... you're going to hit the ceilling a lot faster than you would if did the same thing in a daw.

oh well...

This may help I was reading old issue of SOS mag which had a review of Kore 2 and the reviewer talked about the pages starting with a EZ assignment page will just a Global assign like you said. And a deeper more in-depth assign page were you choose knob, parameter, and value of change. I still don`t have a manual and I`m considering the Kontakt 3 Sampler maybe as I`m a sampling man. :lol:

LFO and Q-Link are both mod matrix sources, not destinations. Therefore one cannot control another one. It kind of makes sense since the MPC's LFOs are per keygroup to control that specific sound whereas a MIDI LFO would make more sense on a global LFO (which it does not have). Q-Link sequence is the closest thing, although you get stepping with that. The way around that is to simply record Q-Link movements into a short sequence and loop it. If you insert a few continuous Q-link values from step edit, you can easily draw out a perfect triangle or saw wave (using short TC will make it smooth). That option doesn't have any live ability, but is a good trick for getting perfect automations. Once you are done, you can save it as a template for the future.

The Bitstream 3X is the only comercial device I know of that has MIDI LFO. It is a really cool feature to have! It would do EXACTLY what you are trying to do. It also has a motion sampler that records knob movements similar to the Q-link method mentioned above. I just remembered, the JP-8080 has a motion sampler too although it may only be internal.

Thought this was a 4k question, so maybe I didn't make it clear... but my first paragraph was soley about the 4k. I don't think any other brand uses the "q-link" term :D

He wants to control Kore 2`s LFO via 4k`s qlink not vice versa. :lol:


Earlier Renegardless and I touched on the qlink and qlink sequence plus seq edit on sending a psuedo lfo like settings to Kore 2. But it was moved to MPC studio cuz I believe that within Kore 2 itself the lfo can be assigned to as a destination. We were currently looking for the Kore assignable page in which to set the lfo as destination. Within Kore 2 itself can you add to discussion on Kore 2 itself????


Thanks for the input on the 4k as it is on point concerning how the 4k works and your great input is always welcomed. 8) But how about Kore 2? Controlling the LFO is possible in Battery 3 and I do believe in Kontakt 3 also to assign the lfo in modulation page. In fact most synths and samplers have the lfo assignable as a destination to be controllled in their own program modulation matrix. Just we have to figure out the Kore`s 2 modulation matrix???
