recording directly to track without going into sample mode

I need some help on this process, I have seen it done before but have no clue how to execute it, I've had my MPC for a minute now, what I'm trying to do is record live to metronome. meaning recording directly to the track with the metronome playing instead of going into sample mode then sampling then recording to track ... can anybody help me with this?

You can only record MIDI or samples that way.
Not audio. You need a harddiskrecorder to do that.

..or am i misunderstanding the question ?

it cant be done on the 2000xl, alternativly you could use an external metronome when in sampling mode.
