Well, I suppose everybody's seen Jel's videos and I think what he does is amazing. Do you people play live on pads using MPC 500? What techniques do you use, if so? What I mean is sample assigning tips and playing tips, as well.
In my case I already figured out how to play basic patterns using index and middle fingers of both hands and I assign samples in the following way:
Let's say it's pad bank A
A1 - kick
A2 - closed hihat (mute group 1)
A4 - open hihat (mute group 1)
A5 - snare
So, the idea is to play the hihat continually and I start by hitting both A1 and A2 pads with index and middle fingers on my right hand, then play just a hihat on pad A2 with the index finger, then strike A2 and A5 together, then again just a hihat, and the sequence repeats. This is a simplest drum pattern which is played by one hand. When I need more feel to it, I use both hands and add some variations like the kick between the beats and an open hihat at the end or in the middle of each pattern using the left hand (open hihat goes well when played together with a kick drum or a snare as well, by the way).
What is left mystery to me is how to play flams and more funky beats with snares on the offbeat. Any playing or sample mapping ideas?
