I tried it also myself. It felt just like the 1000/2500. I don't know why Akai/Numark changed the Mode buttons on the pads..they should have left everything in the same area. The 5000 also does up to 1/64 for those that use quantize. The synth was pretty nice, I was able to create some crazy stuff with it, and the filters sound really good. I used it for about 30 minutes. I thought it was ok. I was impressed, but not for $2499.00. Grab yourself a synth on ebay, and some recording software (reaper..free) and you'll be in a better position. It was a lot lot smaller than I imagined tho..

Just checked out the 5000. I was skeptical about how the synth was going to sound. I played a few patches and was impressed, it wont replace your main VA syth if you have one but it's a nice back up synth. I wish the mpc was midi'd to a keyboard so I could have played the synth that way. I like the new streamlined layout of the display.
I was able to find my way around well enough to do a quick sequence. When I played the sequence back I could tell that there's an obvious difference between the sequencer of the 5000 and 2500 (which I own)
I remember it took me a couple of days to get used to the 2500 timing when I upgraded from the 2000xl so once I get the 5000 I'll expect to have to do the same.

I can't say that I experienced the same thing. It felt like I was using a 2500 to me, and my 2500 feels just like my old 2000XL. Anyone with a 2000/XL should be able to use the 5000 with no problem. The main obstacle is the screen layout, and using the mode button instead of the numerical functions.
