Think I've copped a duff 2KXL. Could somebody check ...

... a few things for me please.

The data wheel is without doubt dead as a dodo but I'm thinking the NV slider has copped it too. What's more there's some really weird behaviour going on in the diagnostic screen which suggests to me it's not just a bust rotary encoder or slider but a problem with some of the logic chips that control them.

So if somebody with a 2000XL that they know is working well could go help me out I'd be very grateful.

First of all go into diagnostic mode by pressing SHIFT and 5 and F1 at the same time. Then press MEMCHK (F5) then press PADCHK (F5). Thump the pads and you should see 'PAD', 'velocity' and 'after touch' update appropriately. Mine does without problem so the pads are fine.

Now, first weird thing. I would have assumed that moving the note variation slider would change the value for 'slider'. Mine doesn't it just stays at 4 for some reason. Can you check yours? Does moving the slider update the value on screen?

Next, without touching the slider press and hold down PAD 14 (top row second from left). Does it make the value shown in 'slider' go up? No? Well it wouldn't make sense if it did would it? Well mine does! This is what makes me think the logic ICs are bogus. When I release the pad the numbers fall back down. Maybe this is normal and just a bug in the diagnostic routines. Regardless moving the slider doesn't update 'slider' which would seem logical.

Finally to confirm the jog wheel is dead although I'm convinced it is because nothing happens when i turn it actually in the operating system. From the same screen press JOG (F3). There are four zeros on screen. Turning my jog wheel does nothing, they don't change. Does this happen with yours or do those numbers change?

Thanks that's it. I'd be really grateful if somebody could shout back. I'm gutted. I've previously owned an MPC2000 Classic and an MPC1000 and I really like the feel and look of the XL. Much less like the classic than I expected.

Well I'm gutted for the seller really. I'm protected by PayPal. I guess they will knock on his door for the money if he's not prepared to refund.

If you are in the Jog wheel testing screen and you turn the Jog wheel and the numbers don't go up or down you definitely have a busted Jog wheel thats a easy fix just solder in a new one there like $7 & the NV slider I am not too sure how you are testing if you sample something and go into the Trim screen does it change the start & end points of the sample but I think that might be busted too which is alittle bit harder to fix but can be fixed.

Thanks for the prompt reply. In the TRIM screen I've tabbed to the start and end values and moving the slider does nothing. Broken?

Definitely broken then. The NV Slider if I remember correctly is a little bit tough to do yourself but I may be wrong.

From what you described that thing is completely wrecked. Return it at all means before trying to fix anything yourself.

There is a small chance that is just a bad memory or other expansion that f***s everything up, so you might check that probably....

no additional memory, don't think it has any expansion, it's got smpte, was that an expansion or standard on the xl?

Hopefully the seller will do the decent thing and refund me. Otherwise anybody know where I stand with hellBay and compensation? I paid with PayPal.

I think you better make a claim to Paypal quick cause he fuked you for sure.

if you got it cheap, it may very well be worth more in parts! what options does it have and is the lcd screen is good condition?
