Out of interest - been trying to convince myself that i need a 500 - What bugs does the 500 currently have (is it just the corrupting of saved files sometimes?) - and are they that much of a pain in the arse?

A high pass filter would make the world of difference to me.

since the mpc 500 ain't got shit besides a great equalizer and great efx that u can add to sounds.. not a chopper in site, not even compatible with 2000xl when it comes to programs.. it would be at least nice if it could play MP3s and at least a BPM output when u make it loop like the 2000xl. yeah the 2000xl is the foundation for everything else thats out and i still highly respect my dusty 2000xl.. stop asking for chopping on the 500, that would have been nice, but i wish it could make me breakfast and tie my shoes in the morning as well...lmaoooooo

People, MPC 500 was made for making beats on the go, while traveling, when you are out of your studio, but want to go on with the beat-making process. It has limitations, all right, but it has a great advantage over other MPC models (or even samplers of other brands): you can put it in your back-pack with a pair of headphones and some additional batteries and take it wherever you want.

Any new functions in the OS will definitely mean a higher price and new bugs, which is not what we want, right?

And I suppose limitations could be also good, because you can use your brains to overcome them. That's how the majority of hip-hop (and not only hip-hop) production techniques were developed, due to budget/hardware/studio limitations.

Many people are talking about a high pass filter here. Gosh, why not use EQ for that? Just roll off the low and middle frequences. And there you go.. )))

It's like having a best friend with a bad temper. It has an mind on its own, and suddently gets unstable. I love it though!

oh no come on now... some customers want to be tricked into believing that the machine they bought naturally comes with bugs, believing that they're buying an imperfect but lovable friend (wtf?!) and some companies even deliberately build on that! damn, don't let anything shitty pass! the mpc 500 o.s. IS buggy, and they should correct those in the first place.

a) because it is POSSIBLE and wouldn't take much effort to add
b) because it makes things a lot easier and saves 1 of the effects – if you wanna be 'creative' and use one of the effects just for cutting the low frequencies, then do that, i'd rather keep complaining DAMN IT!!!

I love my little beat machine, but I HATE AKAI´s OS-politics.
Last weekend, I was well prepared for my live-gig with MPC500 and other stuff - last saving setup in the MPC (all sequ-and-songs) evening before the gig and "fffff....." - the file was corrupt ! I had to start again - working the whole night

AKAI, GIVE ME A BUG-FREE OS OR I´LL BURN MY NEW MPC500 DURING MY NEXT LIVE-PERFORMANCE LIKE A F...... GUITAR!

Don't blame MPC or Akai for your own negligence, man... Having a backup project will always save you time and effort and some millions of nerve cells as well. And, of course, it's a Murfy's law. Everything crashes one evening before the gig. I am sorry you had such a mishap, but still, it's a golden rule when working with the machines: make a reserve copy before you continue working on an important project. Because machines are just like that, they would break down or screw everything up all of a sudden...

How come that the mpc is the only instrument i ever had that fugs up? I just HATE that Murpy guy!

May I repeat that it is not MPC, it is its operator to blame for data losses and all this stuff. MPC cannot do a backup for you.

Eimer, could you be more specific on the circumstances of your MPC-data losses? What did you do/not do when it happened?
