No, upside down  Sounds stupid but it has some use.

Found it anyways.

Yeah, Live is definitely the sh*t. The only thing I dont like is when you render your songs to wavs, it seems so quiet  .

does anyone have any idea why when i use my mpc 2000 classic to play samples in ableton live, the pads aren't in order with the slices in the drum bank? for example, when i play pad 1 on the mpc it'll play the second slice in the drum bank on ableton.

By buying the Live 6 box I originally intended to use Live to add detail and complexity to my otherwise rigid MPC based arranging. I sample mad records for production, perform pad drum tracks, perform with my keyboard/synth and want to do all of it on stage.

What I wanted (and still want) Live to do is:

-To MIDI map my original MPC drum pad performance so I can create better and more groovy fills and breaks for transitioning.

-Chop samples like the "ZONE" chop MPC feature (which appears to be a pain in the ass in Live although the first post about cmd+e seems to be the way).

-MIDI assign those chops in Live to certain pads on my MPC2000xl so I can put effects and automation to them and get down with improvising audio clips and sample chops MPC style...but without having the actual chops or drums on my MPC.

I use a MIDI 2x2 interface. I feel I know the theory of MIDI very well but, until I started messin' with Live, I had NEVER needed to use multi-device midi connectivity or assigning of functions so it makes me new at it.

I've used "Impulse" to capture drum sounds and sample chops (because to me it looked the most like an MPC feel) and see how to chain effects to them. But how do I assign specific MPC pads to those Impulse drums? It seems the Impulse triggering is randomly scattered across MPC pad banks A,B,C and D, sucks! I want, for instance, the Impulse kick to be on Pad Bank A, Pad 1 of my MPC---the snare to be on Bank A, Pad 2---the Melodic sample chops on Bank A, Pad 2,3,4...etc.
How do I assign those Impulse pads to my MPC pads guys??? I loves to improvise with the feel of my MPC but need Live to capture, record and freak it!

Also Impulse doesn't work for my 2 or four bar samples because it decays them out like drum hits. It seems to be only for drum hits and sometimes I have twelve bar one shot or looped samples. I haven't purchased "Sampler" and "Simpler" only works with one sample/audio clip at a time??? Although I can edit one sample at a time in Simpler, I can't chop pieces out of it and assign it to an MPC pad.

I see how audio clips works with loops in the Arrange View but I want those looped audio clips to be my sampled, chopped and rearranged MPC controlled performances ya dig? I'm lost help out.

Peace

I feel like I'm the only one using this program for hiphop.. Most people who use it make house, electronic etc...

Anyway heres some small tips that I've picked up:

- In your preferences under "default warp mode" Set it to "Re-pitch"

That way whenever you drag n drop samples into your set its always in time with the bpm. You can stretch samples up and down by simply adjusting the bpm.

- Ctrl+e is your best friend... I chop samples so damn quick in ableton, **** is not even funny.. Drag a sample or whatever in the arrangement view, chop using ctrl+e.. Turn off the snap for more detailed cuts...

You can then drag each slice into impluse or sampler...

I use Sonar 8PE but I do have a lite version of Ableton,.....I wonder if I could chop up samples in the lite version? Hmmmmm..... I may have to install it and check it out. :D

The pads on the mpc are are not set up to send out midi notes chromatic in the pads order, but thats how impulse´s "pads" are set up iirc. Depending on you mpc you could change the pad setup to chromatic. If not maybe Live´s midi plugin "scale" can help you.
I only got serious with producing in Live when the Drumrack and with it the "slice to midi" option was introduced (V7). That would solve all your problems. You take a sample, insert warp markers where you want to slice (roughly is enough, its non-destructive) then slice it to midi. Live creates a drum rack with simplers inserted for each slice. You can then go on and change which slice is receiving which note.
For long samples (loops?), why dont you just use them as audio clips? You can either get serious with the envelopes or put it in the arrangement view and cut the clip to pieces (ctrl+e) for rearrangement.

Say word Rinseout thanks. But I don't need my MPC to map the samples chromatically. It does have an "auto chromatic" mode where it maps out a sample chromatically, either on the pads or onto a external keyboard, but all I wanna do is trigger specific sample chops (chopped and living in Live) and assign them individually to the mpc pads. This is because not all my sample based production is audio clip worthy loops but rather choppy replaying of loops.

Could I assign a s*** ton of one shot Live audio clips of my individual chops to MPC pads??? Like many audio clips with "Simpler" based chops to MPC pads?

But then how would Live behave when I'm jamming on those MPC pad assignings? Would Live change scenes every time I hit a different audio clip--->sample pad (because that's not what I'm going for) or would it just skip around, from audio clip to audio clip on the vertical audio track as I hit my chops? I guess that would be ideal for me.

If I could use one or two audio tracks, put a ton of Simpler based sample chops in those one or two audio tracks, assign those individual audio clips to my MPC pads and be able to jam freely on those Pads/audio clips like Pete Rock or RJD2.

Am I doomed to sample specifically on my MPC if I want chop performing on a track and just midi sync the sequencing to Live?

Help me out, this is one of my last big questions with Live. Thanks

I've been using Ableton Live since version 3. I'm using Live 7 now. It has come a long way. When they added Sampler and Drum Rack, it all came together.

I'm using Live 7 for producing and recording. All in one. I also use an ASR-10 and various MPC's (60, 3000, 2000XL and I'm trying to cop the 2500 soon).

You can slave your machines to Ableton for tracking shit out. Here's a tip.

Run the MIDI out of soundcard to the MIDI in of your MPC. Then go into Ableton's preferences and turn on the MIDI Sync for your MIDI out. This will lock your MPC to Ableton. When you hit record in an Ableton clip slot, it will give you your countoff, then trigger your MPC.

The only thing is the begining will be off, so here's what you do and it works lovely. Let the it play through a couple time. If you have a 4 bar seq, let it record in like 3 times. Then after it's recorded, set the loop for 4 bars and jump to the second 4 bars. It will be right on point. If you use the first 4 bars it will have a little space in the begining and throw off your loop. guess it's a latency thing. Once you run it through more than once, it catches up and is on the money.

Another tip.
Turn off your quanatize when your doing drums in drum rack. Also after you bang out your drums, turn the grid off in the MIDI clip That way you can more individaul notes a lady's private parts hair to the left or right. Get that shit swingin how you like, not so computer stiff.

Here are some hip-hop joints I did using Ableton Live 7. Been getting good feedback too. Check em out here.
