filtering bass questions

yo whats up...im trying to create some bass lines on my mpc 1000, but im having some trouble with the filters....ive heard people on hear say, you can create bass from pretty much anything using a good mixer and the filters...well, ive been taking a record with fairly heavy bass ( an old drifters record for example), sampling and then using the filters... well...im sampling from a record player through a vestaz dj mixer, boosting the low end...and then into the MPC....whenever i use a low pass filter as soon as i get down to about 8 or 9 the sound just dies... even above this area the sound is pretty weak, and not suitable to put into a beat.....i was thinking it might have something to do with the frequency response on my speakers which rolls off at like 50, but most bass lines are within the 60 - 120 range, or at least thats what i thought. anybody have any suggestions on what to do?? Ive searched all over the site for an answer, but really havent found anything that has worked for me. Thanks in advance

filtering only just cuts the highs.

if you add some resonance you can get a 'phatter' but can compromise your melody.

if you really want to thicken up a bass sample (especially once it has the highs cut out) you can do so with a sub-harmonic generator. There are some nice plugins out there for this (I don't remember the names off hand as I try to stay hardware but search google for sub-harmonic generator audio plugins and I bet you find them)

I have a really nice hardware pedal from electro-harmonix called "bass micro-synth" It is really good for making bass better. It has an octaver, sub-harmonic generator, squarewave distortion, nice hardware lowpass filter with resonance, all on sliders.

If you ever have a chance to pick one of these up, you will be amazed how useful they are.

try going to the params in the trim window open up params then turn up the volume on your sample to 200 that should make it a little louder ,but if yougo to low on the filter it tends to cut it out, so just find a level you can work with, this apply's for the 2k xl not sure about the 1k try it see if it works, let us kno what happens or how you resolve this,

drop the freq filter to about 10 - 12 and raise the res filter to maybe like 7-8.

Sample something that's bass-heavy, like a upright bass note or a low piano key, sample it with the bass turned up on your eq. Go to the parameters screen for your program on the mpc, put the filter down below 10 and the resonant filter above 5. Should shake your brain if done correctly. Now take that pad and 16 levels it and play your bassline. Remeber to set your 16 levels to control tuning, and have your bass note not set to poly, but NOTE OFF or mono, I usually use mono but alot of cats do it on note off. Let me know how it works for you.

thanks for all of the replies...i've tried various things...i wasn't initially trying to sample an isolated note...I was just trying to take the bass from a previous recording.....I mean there are vocals, some strings, distant drums, etc. (an actual portion of a song)... but using the filters I am trying to isolate the bass...if that makes sense....the only thing that has really helped me so far has been running 2 low pass filters on the sample...to tell you the truth I barely notice anything when I turn up the resonance, unless I go up to like 70-99, then it just cracks...I guess I just assumed that a bass note could be taken from almost anything with bass in it, but I'm finding out that to get good bass you have to have a bass heavy sample.........on a side note, as a reply to the last post about 16 levels tuning, dont you find that the bassline, or any other sound is a little awkward sounding when only using the 16 levels tuning...ive found that i need to sample like 3 or 4 different bass parts of a song, and prgram them to get a decent sounding bass....16 levels bass sounds uneven, for lack of a better word.

the filter really does better at creating bass notes than isolating them. the resonance only works on the freq of the filter. drop the filter down low (10) on an violin or oboe sound and then turn the resonance up. you ought to hear it...
