seriously, why has this still not been added? and please don't try to tell me that audio tracks are a compromise.

no, they do not resemble direct record.

try using audio tracks to record a sample that you want to carry over from the end of a sequence to the beginning. can't do it.

I agree--I like that you can set a start point--before I think it was only on the 1---but still say I start my 4 bar audio track on the 3...the last two bars disappear, and do not carry over

I've just mess with os2 audio tracks for a scratch chorus. I think it's worse on os2 than os1. first, it takes me a little time to find loop off on a audio track, seems you gotta change it on drum track. Besides, I though you could start your audio track from where you want but for instance if it set 02.01.01 with rec+ play the recording will be delayed bars later (during playback). Strange, hope JJ will react one day. Not linked but it seems in os2 keeping pressing > will not change bars quickly.

OT - Do you guys think the 1k has the hardware/capability to audition samples from the HD while in play?

???

i assume OT means Off Topic? i don't know if it can audition samples from HD while in play. luckily direct record doesn't require the HD so it doesn't matter.

yeah - audio tracks have always been useless to me because of this. you're better off using a sample assigned to a pad, which is what I do.

it's beyond the capabilities of the hardware to be in load/save mode at the same time as it's doing any sort of playback. this is why you have to stop the sequencer to enter the load/save screen.

You know, thinking about it I bet that proper 'direct record' could be implemented at the same time as crossfade loop

for the audio track to loop back around again, the tail end would have to be capable of recording OVER the beginning of the samples, but no destructively. Seems like direct record and crossfade loop would both require the similar back end coding, but it also seems like both would require double polyphony for the short moments of fading and/or looping back arond

don't think too much into it, direct record is simple: begin recording a sample in the main screen while the sequence is playing, remember what step at which recording was started, assign newly recorded sample to pad, insert note event to trigger pad in sequence at step where recording was started.

it doesn't matter how long the recorded sample is or how many times the sequence loops around as it's playing. it's the same as any other sound assigned to a pad in a program.

you can already play a sequence while in the record screen, it can't be too much of a jump.

how about this, rather than direct recording from the main screen, if it's easier to code, what if direct recording was added to record mode?

while in record mode, if you hit "Start" to begin recording a sample while a sequence is playing, the step at which the sequence was at when you hit "Start" is saved in memory. when you finish sampling, you get the "Assign to Pad" window, then, if a sequence step has been saved to memory and you've assigned the sound to a pad you get an "Assign to Track" window.

a caveat with that is you'd have to make sure the "Assign to Track" window only allows you to assign to a track which either doesn't yet have a program assigned to it, or has the current program assigned to it.

this is exactly what im talking about. the audio tracks are cool if i want to play back an entire chunk of the song as a .wav, to save polyphony, but they're cumbersome live. i love the kaoss pad because once you set the tempo, the sampler automatically records in 2 bar, 4 bar, etc. loops and then starts the sample immediately. it's so useful, and if the mpc could do it even better by simply assigning a new sample to a new track at whatever time the sequencer was at when it started recording, it would be incredible. you could build whole patterns with live instruments on the fly!

something that would be dope is the possibility to delete multiple samples at a time. It so time wasting one by one when you have 50 takes to delete. A shortcut like tap tempo + data wheel or anything else would be nice. I'll ask murai

can you not use the purge function? man, that is a pain.
