MPC 500 keeps switching off

Hi, my mpc 500 has just started to switch off unexpectedly. I load it up and pretty much as soon as the pads are used, it reboots. This has never happened before (i bought the machine new last summer) and only happens when a pad is used.

I have 128MB of RAM and version1.11 in there.
does anyone know what the problem could be/ how to fix it?

Update it to the new OS... I think that might help. You are running it on the original OS. There is a 1.13

Are you using batteries when it does this? I found that the batteries are pretty loose in the back and when striking the pads the connections are temporarily separated and the unit reboots. I tweaked the springs so that the batteries were more snug and this solved the problem.

This also happened to me when I hit pads 1 and 2 (right above the battery compartment). It happened on two different occasions while I was using batteries when the voltage was below 7 volts. I re-set the batteries the first time and was fine and just plugged in the MPC on the second time and was all good.

Yup the batteries are loose.

I'd also like to add that if this was a problem with the printed circuit board (PCB), the reboot problem would either happen constantly with no fix or the MPC would simply short out and not work at all afterwords. So don't bother sending your MPC back to Akai. They won't find anything wrong and just waste your time. This also has nothing to do with what OS you're using, as this is clearly a hardware problem. Just doesn't seem like a problem with the PCB.

Can you please tell us how exactly you tweaked the springs? I'm assuming you just stretched them out a bit but I'd like this to be clarified for posterity. Thanks.

Yeah, just stretched them out a bit.

Had the same problem when MPC was battery powered. It would reboot all of a sudden after I played on the pads. I am sure it's not a bug or defect. The solution is either tweak the battery compartment to make sure the batteries are always tight, or use a power adapter.

And yes, OS 1.11 MUST be updated to the most recent one 1.13, if you don't want any unpleasant surprises like data loss or anything like that.
