Distortion on some vinyls

I've been collecting couple vinyls during four years and i've noticed that some vinyls have some distortion which pretty much ruins listening. I never really cared about science behind vinyls; I just love the sound.

I had kind of revelation just while ago with "Rushup Edge" by Tuss, when i changed weight balance to very high and suddenly it wasn't distorting anymore. I can now fix pretty much all quality issues just by changing balance. However there is still one lp which doesn't get fixed by this: "Escape from New York"-soundtrack. So i'm kind of asking could this be a recording issue or needle is ****... Player is Stanton STR8-80 if it helps.

Btw, Tomita's "Planets" is **** awesome **** it sounds great.

The balancing of your tonearm has more to do with manufacture specs per cartridge. Could be old used up vinyls.

Even the pawn shop used up crackin' records don't have that distortion

Then again this one is in mint condition... And distortion happens more in lower frequencies.

sometimes it's the record.
can be caused by poor pressing, plates or mastering. but you're talking about 'escape from new york' the film soundtrack? that should be mastered properly with decent plates. could be a bad pressing. buy another copy?

putting too much weight on the tonearm will cause problems as well.

yeah thats good you balance the tonearm often track the anti skating too, clean your records good as well before and after play, if you use some alcohol and clean around the parts you hear,see if that helps .

or yes the record could be shot,it's been played out the gruv is shot.


check the needle as well, needle wearing out could cause this and if your needle came with a brush use that to clean the tip,

i don't use this , but try to use some gruv glide on it and see if it goes away
