Ahhhh....so the 5000 is essentially a 2500? Now that makes sense to me...

Well it's not quite that simple but it fills the position of the 2500 while adding some new features and functionality but retained the relative price point.
The Price drop on the 2500 is to help them move the remaining units they are rolling off the line or that are already in inventory.
The idea of a 2500xl or a lite version seems cool but it would be hard to strip features from the 5k without hurting overall sales.
The 1k on the other hand has 2 points to attack in the Akai OS.
1. they could give it the full 2500 feature set, that along with the new black pads would make the 1k a bargain
2. add some of the newer 5k features to it and make it a mini 5k with less hardware and reduced features
Unlike adding to the 2500 this would have a lesser affect on the 5k sales.

I'm not with you here. It's not the same price point at all, being $1000 above the original 2500 price.
If they sort out one of the new models at all, in my opinion it should be the 1000, which was a major catastrophe for Akai's reputation. And it is closer to the 500 (or now the 2500 pricewise), than the 2500 is to the 5000.
Anyway, I doubt that would happen seeing that everybody and their momma want to have one. We'll see.

Don't know what numbers you are using but the selling price of the 5k is only a few hundred dollars different from what the 2500 selling price was.
With it's added hardware and features you could pretty much say it's actually less for all practical purposes.
You can't improve the 2500 without it affecting the 5k market.
The 500 has a niche, the 1k has a niche the 2500 no longer has one it was taken by the 5k.
If you can remeber when the 2500 was released Akai called it their new flagship and the best MPC ever.
People argued that the 4k hadn't been discontinued at that time but later found out it was true.
We are again at that point the 5k is the new flagship and the 2500 is going away.
Just wait and see

Ok, it's arguable how good the 2500LE really looks...but don't ask how many people are probably behind the 2000XLSE3 now since Pete Rock used it in that Future Music Magazine video
