serious crashing issue with the 60

I've just coped a 60 mk1, 3.10 OS, full mem, broken floppy. The thing was working fine for the first couple of hours, then suddenly the screen graphics grabbled into doodle. Sound kept on coming out fine but no readable graphics could be displayed. Tried to restart it, a blank screen came up. No start up message, no nothing. Again restarted it, a full black screen came up and froze. Left the damn thing overnight and tried again this morning. Everything was working fine (?!).

Then, tried again this evening and it crashed again the same way: crambled non readable graphics and then no reboot possible. I guessed it was the floppy that was crashing it so I took it off. No luck. I even swapped the floppy with one from my s950. No luck again.

My guess is the OS chipset gone bad. However, the frequency of the crashed is unpredictable. And also, while the floppy it came with was supposed to be dead, it comes back to life (just the light) whenever it wants. Wtf?! I can't make any sense.

Any suggestions? Should I check on the OS chipset? And how am I supposed to do that? Or simply I should return it back? Any help would be appreciated.

It might be the power supply. I recently got an MPC 60 repaired for the power supply as it was doing something somewhat similar to what you mentioned. Good luck.

Well, my guess would go to the screen cable, but still it should boot up normally. Also, if it was for the supply it shouldn't be able to boot up normally every now and then? Or maybe that is the answer to everything? However, I still can't figure out how the hell did the floppy came back to life after like 6 months? The other guy swore he never seen it pop up a light (maybe he's just bullshitting me).

I have the japanese version of the MP. I will check again tomorow for a converter although I'm using a pretty heavy duty one for US power supplies.

From your description it sounded as if it would boot fine, just no graphics on the screen. That could easily look like it was "freezing". But it can be a lot of error sources...

Well, I'm close to a conclusion about this: Even if the screen is messing up, sound will come out naturally and it would sample fine (I memmorized the path for sampling and playback and did it while it was crashed). So, it has to be the screen somehow.

Power is flowing good to it cause it fires up OK and it lights up. However, to a random way it crashed the graphics. A friend of mine told me that it could be the soldering points down to the motherboard were the cable goes. Or it could be the cable itself. Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out if this problem can be fatal or I could fix it myself (I ain't got a problem with soldering etc.)

Has anyone fixed a problem like this before?

i had a similar problem...all i could see on the display were black bars and stripes. at first i thought it was the display too..then i sent the machine to midi rakte and the man told me it was a power problem and he fixed it. have you checked your fuses inside the mpc or converter? or try to look how much power comes to the display(the display needs 5V)

Thing is that the screen is not doing it constantly. So, if it was a power problem I guess it should be doing it all the time. How much did it cost to fix in midiraket?

at first he di´dnt want to take money..then i gave him 1€ for the fuses and a little money (under 50€) for the effort :wink:

I actually did that about a week ago and it hasn't crashed since then. I've ordered also a spare ribbon to get it replaced and see if it is going to crash again.
