could the MPC be used to play an external sound module that does not have keys? ie. can you use the pads like a keyboard to play sounds from a sound module?

Yes, you can. The key assignment of the pads is a bit weird (it's not a regular scale: C-C#-D etc.) . But you can change that and save your own template.

Yes, polyphony is mentioned & detailed in the manual and in several other threads and posts on the forums here.
