What's your advice for bass samples ?

Hello,

Nothing urgent but I wanted to ask you guys for advice because even though I am very happy so far with my MPC2500, my Motif rack es and my numerous samples compilation (including a few pro quality royaltee free CD's & DVD's), I am struggleling to find decent bass samples.
My main music type is rap...

I am after single note samples (one shot), is there any CD that you guys would recommend for bass ?

I got my Motif rack es quite recently so I haven't got to the various effects and special options yet, but I am really deceived when it comes to bass voices.
Are there any advices that you guys would have regarding the Motif rack es ?

I think that this situation might be like the MPC2500's manual where some important/useful instructions and tips are not mentionned but fortunately there is the "Beat Making on the MPC2500" which was of great help to me...

It is indeed a big arsenal, I am happy with it and there are a lot of voices that I haven't gone through yet but when it comes to bass, so far it is a disapointment to me.

To tell you the truth, I have even considered buying a bass guitar, but I would need to save up first.
Maybe you (or anyone whiling to help) could give me some direction with my Motif rack...

if your looking for some single bass hits try bebop jazz records or cds. bebop was all about improvisation and a lot of the songs have bass solos and even drum solos. i hope this helps

oh i thought you were just looking for regular records and cds. a lot of those old jazz records can be chopped up get some good sounds. no prob. peace.

with the motif, you can make very good bass sounds.
think about what you're after with a bass sound, and work towards it - think about the type of attack and decay you want etc. just don't fart-arse around twisting knobs and see what happens.

also, don't judge a bass sound on how it sounds in isolation. bass and kick work together.

not to dissuade you from buying a bass guitar - nice idea. but a bass guitar doesn't automatically just make a great bass sound. just like with the motif, you'll have to work to get the sound you want. string type, fingering technique, amp, mic type and placement, etc. will all dramatically effect your sound.

Bear in mind that I've got the Motif Rack (ES), I'm only writting that because it seems that you might think that I have the actuall Motif keyboard (you mentionned knobs)...

Well I appreciate your advice but your answer is similar to Lampdog, really it would help to have an example of two.

Maybe my expectations were too high, I repeat that I am very happy the the Motif Rack Es, it's just that I'm deceived regarding the bass voices.
I also think that there is no such thing as a "perfect" hardware that's why I am whilling to get hold of some bass samples CD (or eventually a guitar when I can afford it).

Finally I want to thank you guys because you take the time to reply and you are not arrogant which is great communication.

But since nobody has recommended any bass samples CD yet, I am curious; what do you guys use for bass ?

I`m sampling hum and tweaking it within the MPC......if you should try it,be careful with your speakers!

as an example. the track i'm working on at the moment uses a preset for bass - the "perc organ" patch from yamaha digital fm synths (dx7, dx100 etc). i have the tx81z.

this is a classic bass sound used in late 80s, early 90 new jersey-styled house. not very imaginative.
