Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

This thing is a monster. I started reading this thread before I dove into the 4k. I've heard mostly good things about it. I also realized the manual in the box was watered down. I do have a question because I'm running into some trouble already.

Programs - I started loading them and using them in my sequence. I realized i can load a different program for each track. But sometimes when I loaded a new kit for example it messed up the order of the programs in my sequence. What did I do worng?

I'll continue to search each page here and see if I come accross something. But if someone knows please hook me up. I'm probably overlooking something.

Hi.. Welcome to the fold!

The MPC 4000 has a item called a "Multi". A "Multi" is consisted of up to 128 "Parts".
A "Part" is a Program that is assigned to a Multi.

So if you go your "Multi" page on the MPC, you'll see a list of the "Parts" or Programs that have been assigned to that Mulit.

So let's say you have this.

Multi 1
Part 1: 808 Kit
Part 2: Memory Moog Pad KG

When you are in the "Main" program, in the "Track" section, you can choose
which "Parts' are used by that Track. As well as What Program is assigned to that Part.

You choose which "Part" or "Program" your track will use there.

You can load a thousand programs, but the only ones available from the "Main" screen will be those assigned to "Parts" in the "Multi'.

Does that make sense.

You will need to describe more what you mean by this:
" But sometimes when I loaded a new kit for example it messed up the order of the programs in my sequence."

If you load a new program (Load page), it shouldn't even affect what you have in your parts/multis.

Do you mean, when you select a particular program for your Track, that it changes that Program for other Tracks in that Sequence? If so, then look in the
Main -- > Track field and see where it says:
"Part1: 808DrumKit

If you want Track 1 to play the MemoryMoog, then you will want to highlight the "Part1" and move the Jogwheel, until it says "Part2:MemoryMoogKG". If you
highlight the "808DrumKit" part, your actually reassigning a different Program to that particular Multi Part.

Does that make sense? Let me know any followup questions...

Thanks for reaching out Dave.

I see what you’re saying about multi’s. I want to dig in deeper on that. I come from the 2k where I would sample and save a program then recall that program when making a beat.

What I always wanted to do was open other Programs and choose between them for the ultimate sequence and sounds. But on the 2k if you did that it would erase the program that was already loaded. Only allowing 1 program at a time.

When I heard this might be possible on the 4k I began to dream of the possibilities.

When the 4k arrived it had a few folders with programs in them. So I went to work and began my first sequence. On ( Trk 1 / Part 1 ) I loaded a kit. Then I went to Track 2 and kept the same kit and part.

When I got to part 3 I noticed a Bass folder before so I went back and loaded it. Waa laa I was able to use that on Trk 3 and switched the Part to Bass. So it was looking like this

Trk 1 -Part 1 drum kit
Trk 2 – Part 2 drum Kit
Trk 3 - Part 3 Bass

Then I wanted some strings that I also saw in a folder. So I went back and loaded them. Here’s where my bubble began to burst. All my Parts were gone and the Sequence was only playing the strings I just loaded. What happened? There was another time when I had Strings open I went back and loaded Horns and the strings were gone too.

Is this a Drum program VS a multi issue?

I also noticed the on the Program list the Program No. Column is this suppose to stay off or have a # there?

Make sure you don`t assign the same drum kit to 2 different parts. If you wish to do so make a copy of the drum program with a different name and assign it to part 2. Plus it is better to do all of your program assignments in the multi page earlier, so when you come to the main page just assign the part number to the track and you are set.

Another recommendation is to download the reference manual if you haven`t already and learn about working with the internal midi port to assign multiple programs to the same midi channel.

Renegardless advice is a good guide to follow also.

Haze? You don't recommend assigning the same drum kit to 2 different parts. But rather, your recommendation is to make a copy of the drum program with a different name and assign it to another part? Im curious to know what problems this will breed and why? As always, thanks.

I always had problems when I did. And from my understanding programs only work right when set to one specific midi channels. Besides we can use up to 128 individual programs however we are limited to only 32 internal midi channels. It is less problems and far easier if you are using one drum program to make several copies of it rename if you have too and tweak the individual settings within the programs and assign each program to the same Int A or B midi channel if you like or different parts.

Wait a minute come to think of it now I think I have it now Part is also for controlling the audio outputs, panning, and levels of each program. Yeah parts are for individual program`s panning, output, and level very simplfied plus the midi channel.

But if we use the Int Midi Port then you can set as many programs to the same midi channels but still you have to set each program to an individual part in the Multi for the things I specified above.

Part is mainly pan, output, level for individual programs under the Multi not just a midi channel that is the misunderstanding I think.
