The first time i eared bout a MP was in ’94, will nerver forget it ! « MPC3000 the Drum-Machine by Akai » said the advertisment ! Price was 31.000FRs (4726 euro) !!!! Really expenssive for the asprine producer I was !!! I was using a KorgM1&X5, seq. on cubase (b&w) with Atari St1040 and my homie owned a S3000XL !
I starting wonder when I could buy one. I was like « yo ! Akai made this all innna box tools that cats are using to produce dem beat, what’s the deal ? ». When I felt sure that the sampler engine of the 3K was the same that dat my boy’s S3KXL I start to listen to the S3000 in a different way…
Two years later I bought a S1000 ran to my homie studio and we start to compare the sound…You should say I’m crazy but I felt (and still feel) the S1000 sound better (had better converssers) than the S3000XL ! We’re in ‘96/’97 and I steel got no MP !
In those days Marcus Miller dropped an album called « Tales » where he use a MPC3K a EPS-16 and a ASR-10 !!! I was about reggae (I’m basically a bass-player), dance-hall music and hip-hop ; so when I saw that M.Miller was using this tool, the « MP fever » came back with two question !
1). What’s make the MPC so popular ? 2).What’s make this tool a pro one ?
I mean, if I like how my S1000 sound and feel nice with how I’m doing my seq. why should I get the MP ? For the « all in one » ? But I don’t like how the S3000 sound ether… And remember the cost !!!
Years pass and the 2000 cames out ! I was like « once again they made it from a sampler that allready exist, nothing new since the 3K exept the wave form !! » plus they take it from the S2K, not such a « blazing » gear !
Finally year 2001 came and I bought the 2000XL. Strange thing, when I ran the store I never ask for a 3K or a 2K ! I ran straight to the 2000XL without any questions ! Why ? I still don’t know !!! I think it just was the time for it ! OOOPPPS, yes the price !!!!
Now I’m really happy with my MP I have no regret xcept the for the plastic parts, I love how the 3K is strong building !
And yes I found it, the crazy thing on the MP are those pads !
Anyway I still got my S1000 ! with other samplerz as ASR & SP…’Cause I know that a all inna box could be perfectible and each trade has his own sound…
My conclusion are :all MPCs are « pro » one it’s about how « pro » is your music and what is your environement.
MPCs are popular cause first, we (producers) make it popular…
The only one MPC they made with a singular sampler engine is the MPC60, some said it’s a S900/950 engine but it’s not…
So, to all my MPCiste , feel nice wit your MP and busss !!!!
Peace.
