....or at least an option to default to 16. I had a real fast and efficient workflow when Non Destructive Chop limited you to only 16 chops. I'd have a custom program saved that would have chops 1-16 automatically assigned to the pads respectively.....then all I would need to do is assign the chopped sample to all 16 pads in one swoop and in an instant, it's ready for flippage.

Having the setting to 32 now means that your samples are laid out extending to bank b....which sucks for 1 or 2 bar samples. If I had a longer sample to chop, I would just split them and create separate programs....I wish there was an option to change it. :(

that's not what he's talking about. the number of non-destructive chops is hard set at 32. you can select any one chop you want, but the total number will always be 32.

pesonally, i think that the total number of non-destructive chops should be user selectable from 2 to 64. definitely worth a request.

if you turn on NDC and dont press slice, you'll have 32 slices
if you press slice it should default to 16 slices (well it did when i just tried it)
press do it and your whole sample will be divided evenly into 16 (but some slices will be duplicated for chops 17-32)

in other words its 3 steps 1.chop:on 2.slice 3.do it

Non destructive chop and Slice are two totally different methods. The reason I prefer NDC is because if you decide that the startpoint is not where you wanted it to be (after your in full swing beatmaking mode) then you cannot adjust if you have sliced it. Also, NDC allows you to overlap endpoints of chops.

It would be real nice to be able to specify the number of NDC chops...(not slices)

^^^^^
thats not entirely true,
if you turn NDC on first the slice key sets the slices for NDC

i did this very thing with NDC about the time of posting my first message and made a nice little groove with it!

this picture shows what you should see after turning chop on.
the function of the slice key changes to set NDC slices, all with overlapping start and end points if you change them.

this is the other slice that your talking about:

the only ndc differnce i know of from the early days is the chops werent even in size, but got progressively smaller: the first chop played the whole sample (16/16ths), the second chop most of the sample (15/16ths)...all the way to the last sample which only played the last 16th or whatever.

just in case your experiencing a bug im still on 1.13

wow, this is great! thanks for posting this info. i had no idea it worked like that. i saw that SLICE tab and just assumed that it dropped you back into destructive slice mode and never touched it.

the terminology is a little confusing because we have both non-destructive and destructive SLICE tabs named the same. maybe the tab name in the NDC screen should be changed to ND-SLICE or something?

I have a request when it comes to chopping. Would it be possible to have the chops layed out on the padds as you go? This would make it so much easier to check your work before you actually "do it."

Oh shnapp!! I see what your sayin mikolo......damn man I didn't know we could do this already.

Like Sooty_G, I also assumed it took you to destructive slice........

Thanks for the info....I'm real motivated now.

I still use the destructive slice & I think it is easier. I don't get the non-destructive slice I guess.
I knew about getting to the non-destructive screen by hitting slice like the above picture, but what is so great.
Maybe Nym could do a video chopping the exact same sample w/ normal slice & ND showing me & others the differance.
That would be really good & informative.

big larry> main differences are of course you can do and redo your in and out points and the chops are linked to their own pads in NDC. (no need to press pad + right/left arrow eternally) Drawback is that it doesn't create an automatic program for now.

Well done man. I get it now.
That small post hit the light bulb.
I have wanted to adjust a slice point before, but settled for dropping or speeding the chop pitch slightly.
I thought it was weird that I had to assign each chop to a pad in the program view w/ the NDC.
Also, I think it gives different results than the normal slice. Could be wrong on that though.
It would be a bad ass tool if it worked just like the normal slice, but you had control over each start & end point.
Also, I like using the arrows & hitting a pad to trigger the sample when editing.
I thought it was OK that each sample was on its own pad when using the NDC edit.
I guess I'm used to the hitting arrows to check out my chops.
Anyhow for the NDC fans why would JJ have NDC assigned to pads when editing but then when in the main screen make people create the program manually?

For now I have a fast work flow w/ the normal slice.

1. Sample the loop
2. Go to trim & loop it perfect
3. Discard the extra B.S. (if it gonna be more than 32 chops I copy the sample.)
4. Use the tap tempo to set the MPC's tempo real close to the loops bpm.
5. Now just use destructive slice on either 16 or 32.
Perhaps an old recipe, but it comes out the oven right every time.
