:?: Ok so im looking into buying an MPC1000 this will be my first mpc. I'm still not even sure if I should go with the 1k or with maybe a 2kxl. Either way my question is that if I bought an mpd either 32, 24, or 16 could I use that to control the MPC and not even have to worry about the 1k pad issues?

If you are buying it new, you don't have to worry about it.

If you are buying a used one with the old style cheapo pads, you might have to worry, because an external MIDI controller of any type is only good for triggering samples and sequence changes. That will actually take most of the wear off the old pads, but if the old pads die you still won't have any way to switch between the 1000's different operating modes. You'd be dead in the water.

Someone on here mentioned that the MPD 16 uses the same internal (not the midi) pad connector with the same pinout as the internal 1000 pad connector. If that is the case (don't know myself) then it would be possible to directly control the 1000 internal pad functions with the MPD 16 pads, but that would be a job for a true hardware hacker and not really a solution for the average user.

Buy a new one.

I think it was Nym who posted up a quick way of testing the pads, if you have access to the MPC - pinch the lower left corner of pad 1 and pull the pad up - if you can pull out the corner flap of the pad sheet then the machine has the new pads. I tried this with my new 1k just out of curiosity, and it's easy to do - the pad just slots right back in (you don't actually need to pull it right out, just far enough to see if it's going to come out).

I'd advise searching for the original post before trying anything though, just in case I've gotten anything wrong.

They don't have "upgrades", they have a proper set of normal MPC pads instead of original cheap and known-by-Akai-to-be-junk 1000 pads. Akai includes new pads on all the current units and only sells the replacement kit as an "upgrade" because they want to get away with selling gear that they knew was defective technology in the first place.
