SP12 or ASR10

get a emax rack to get some dirt in the samples...and its really easy to use and some analog filters...really cheap aswell............

ASR10 for drums is interesting. I'm probably so far out of it to know but which producer has amazing drums and uses the ASR for them?

So far, I still prefer old-school drums from like Dilla, PR and Premier, and I can get with what Marco Polo's doin (though it's not as heavy...).

Yea the ASR along with the MPC 3000 I would probably say is the greatest sampler ever made.

The thing I really love about the ASR-10 is it's a synth disguised in a sampler. Even b4 I knew anything about synthesis I would just be effing around on the EPS-classic, tweaking parameters just to see what it could do. I've made some sounds using feedback as the raw material that I still have to this day... Plus the stock FX are truly ill.
The trip is... that thing is so complex, yet one of the easiest machine to sample and make a beat on.
I can't help but wonder what ensoniq would have done had they been around today.

Yeah, I guess none of those guys drums move me too much. I've actually heard drums from Kev Brown on the 2kxl that have that sound similar to SP12 drums but not as open. Plus I'm not really up on the whole Kanye style of beats. Like "the corner" beat he did was nice, but the drums didn't rock so much as the music.

When I listen to something like the U.N. (say Game of Death), to me THOSE are goddamn drums. You can't really get that from an ASR, and it wouldn't be worth it to try.

IMO drums on the ASR can knock and slap really hard but the sequencer is one of the most stiff, un-groovy sequencers ever. The "biggest" names on that list up there pair the ASR with an MPC for sequencing. That must be they're edge...

I don't know that the MPC provides an edge.. It's just that those dudes make hot shit either way. Drums are particular.. I mean if the music on top is shit, dope drums won't solve it. To a certain extent though, if the drums lack a bit, dope music on top is gonna sound good overall anyway.

I was kinda joking about the MPC being they're edge...
But even more so, I was making reference to the fact that out of the producers on the list that use ASR's, the ones that I know also use MPC's seem to have the biggest hits. (Kanye, Toomp, D. Banner)

The one with Busta is alright. I mean it's like a new Jump Around -- like pretty much all Busta's stuff.. The drums all pretty much all snare.. the thing is the kicks out of the ASR are all sort of Jon Bonhamish, that mushy poofy sound. The 50 song is terrible, but I'm not a fan at all.

ASR drums are not bad, especially on hihats, and particularly warm snares, and the ASR generates tremendous volume, but the SP was the first machine that to me easily and naturally produced that tight hard heartbeat kick sound. I dunno if you've ever been punched in the chest, but the SP feels like that. If the snare is right with the kick, look out.

I guess an easy example is Pete Rock's tha Game. Lots of dudes used those drums (when they came out on Drum Crazy years ago, people went crazy with them), but nothing came out like tha Game.
