Promoting a web site

So i started a forum awhile ago. I'll leave the name out for now because i don't want it to come off like i'm blatantly promoting it. I'm having alot of trouble finding more than a few steady members. I knew from the start that it would be very challenging to get it going. I haven't exactly had trouble getting members, i'm having trouble getting active memebers. I notice i have far more vistors than who post as well, which i know is typical. I know it's hard to get people to stay when most people already have a far more developed forum. I'm just wondering if people have any advice.

Ok, i still would like advice about this but...i found that through some coding i did, no new members could register. RULE #1, check everything regularly. In this case it was almost imposible to find out because the people who couldn't get on couldn't easily contact me.

I'm still wondering though if anyone has advice, i just wanted to throw that out if people have their own, you cannot be lazy.

Bro I dont know if youve done it already but firstly you need to advertise a bit...

try googleads or yaboo! marketing if you got some $$$ to market yourself...

also do some research on SEO (search engine optimisation)

make loads of free blogs on blogspot, wordpress etc... relevant to the subject content of your forum and and link to and from them (reciprocal links)

you can also try link exchanges with similar forums/sites...

and finally if you have a niche exploit it...i.e. this place has bare knowledge, the tutorials...warbeats have fl project files etc, etc...

you need to make sure your site pops up on that first google page when people are typing relevant keywords.

Thanks, i actually have looked into many of these, i just haven't had time to do much (very poor excuse but it happens). Ironically, i got an internship where a big part is web promotion so that should teach me some too, thanks for the advice.
