hard drive stress on OS2

I've just 'installed' (i.e. physically placed inside the MPC via the HDM-10) a Western Digital Scorpio 80G Drive into the MPC1k. I can hear the hard drive do a brief spin when the MPC powers up (hopeful...) but it doesn't appear in the device window in either load or save pages to give me the chance to format it.

Any suggestions? Do i need to go back to AKAI OS to format it? Or is the drive just useless?

You might need to initialize it on your PC first, format it fat32

Tip: The drive will not show up automatically in save/load, you have to highlight the drive name and toggle via the data wheel. Check the window key for the format option.

that's the problem, it's not showing up when i select the destination and spin the data wheel... thanks for the tip though. It only gives me the option to format the memory card, can't get it to see the HD

Possibly check the jumpers on the drive.

Is it new or was it in a laptop before?

yep, it was brand new, being sold by Thomann as specifically for the MPCs1000 and 2500... as far as i could tell from all the woolly descriptions out there, there are are no jumpers on the drive, which i took to be the correct state for it...

when you've highlighted the drive name, rotate the data wheel by one click only, and then wait a few seconds, sometimes it takes a moment for the hard drive to initialise, and if you scroll back the other way, because it appears nothing is happening, then it'll skip back to the cf card with out you realising. just a thought.

thanks for that... i did a lot of messing about with the data wheel and no joy, but i might try it just one more time...

format it in the mpc... i had the same thing as you happen in my 2500 and formatted it and it was all good after that. can't remember the exact menu it was under, but it wasn't hard... rtm

I'm always amused when someone who doesn't seem to be able to read tells me to read something. If you actually CAN read then examine ALL the posts in this thread including my intial thread starter and you'll discover why i'm saying this. Is your avatar an indication of your literacy skills?

damn, my bad man... so i missed a few words, it wasn't like i told you to stop posting and search. no need for you to get offended. i was trying to help you and you responded like a jerk.

if the drive isn't showing up, and fiddling with your data wheel as others have mentioned isn't getting you anywhere, you can pop it in an external enclosure and format it on the computer if it is indeed a formatting issue. if i recall correctly, the drive i bought didn't even come with a jumper on the back, so it shouldn't be a jumper issue.

Noted, but in my opinion 'responding like a jerk' is saying RTM to a post started by someone who obviously doesn't need to read it. It's offhand, lazy, and rude. I'd expect you to be equally offended if someone put that in response to a query you'd posted. In general that acronym is condescending and arrogant and is mostly used by someone who's trying to appear superior - or a jerk... So i'd suggest leaving it for other people to use if you don't want people like me who have done all their homework to fly off the handle.

However, i'm genuinely grateful for your other suggestion and i'll give it a try. Thanks.
