i think quantization is for puffs to be honest, i think its a short cut to creating beats and that if you use it your beats well never sounds as bouncy and natural is it would do with out it.

i think you can use it to your advantage though, sometimes i quantize the hi hats ( i know what your thinking but wait) purposely and then build my beat on that..

dont you hate it when your first kick is always a lil to late so when the bar reapeat its self you can notice the inperfectness. same ith hi hats you do certain amount of hits and theres that extra pause in the end ?.. if you use quantize you propably dont know what im talkin about but what i do is just quantize the first kick to prevent this..

in general i prefer not to use quantize but sometimes it helps .. lo to tell you the truth i use to use quantize all the time when i was a hardcore noob thinking that was the way to do it HAhA but anyway please mention how you use quantize to make your beats so we can all share and upgrade.. im guessin this should have been in production techniques oh well

FYI J, have you used different time sig resolutions when you use quantization? This goes hand in hand in obtaining whatever feel you're trying to get.

why not turn off quantize and practice hitting the pads on time. then when the beat loops its not off. i try not to use quantize at all. sometimes the track will call for it, but generally it is always off.

practice practice practice

im saying that a lot in the threads i answer lately:)

practice

Yo yo! ... a lot of y'all katz are dissing this feature 'cause y'all ain't understanding the foundation stuff & things that will distinguish the feel of a tune.

And I also wonder how many of y'all don't understand measures and lengths of measures...ie: one bar, two bar, four bar, eight bar, etc., or are there a few of you that don't set any set measure lengths and just start from beat one. Just curious :)

question by time signatue you mean you can move hits back or forward to the point you want. in sense this is still quantized isnt it? tell you the truth never even used it ..

Umm and sometimes i dont want my beats bouncy?

my definiton of bouncy is a beat that allows you to nod your head to it natural- dont like that robotic ryhtem

eastcoast121 wrote:use swing and later and earlier shifts and you can get it exactly how you want it to sound dig it?
thecnically this is not true.. yea you can mess with the swing and find a rythem that sounds hot .. or even find a ryhtem thats even hotter then it would be without! quantize on. BUT in the end of the day a guy who has mastered his drum patterns without quantize would be close to the exact rythem he is lookin for compared to messing with the swing percantage to find a decent sound... again this points out that swing is a short cut

Nah J, it's got more to do with structure...ie: sixteenth, eighth, quarter, half, & whole notes/beats need something to go by.

That's why there's time sigs, treble/bass clefs, etc.

If the swing gets him where he wants to be then why not use it? It's a tool for you to use, it's in there.

the reason is that it would be alot better in the long run to get use to not depending on the swing to find a rhytem nothing wrong with the swing its easy effective but the outer route would be better in the long run you must agree even if it needs alot of practice to get there

Better for an individual is his/her own decision. If swing is there, and it's useable then use it if you like.
If it's not there, then go about it manually. Easy.
