Best way to get started (to the new cats)

When I started I was rockin only a asrx pro and headphones with my 1200's, i had that set up for 4 years.

shit man im using an old tape casset recorder i got for 5 bucks at a garage sale with some pots and pans for my percussion and a flute i bought from the dollar store

So I am going to use this as a 'FAQ thread' because I dont see one.

I am a newb.

I dont need a fancy TT to take samples from, right?
Can I use an oldie belt driven, and just buy a mixer and some cords to take a sample from vinyl and put it on my MPC or MAC?

A belt drive deck will be fine, but if you decide to pursue the DJing side of things then you will ideally need direct drives.

you also want to make sure that your turntable can slow down to atleast 50 percent with the slide part i stupidly purchased a turntable that only slows down 20 percent i think so when it comes to slowing down a beat to desired tempo i gota do it on the mpc which im sure everyone know is a b*tch

I fully understand the difference and benifits of a DD table. I just have a couple freebee belt drivens currently.
Eventually I will buy a DD, but I would like to purchase an MPC and mixer first.

Not sure about the speeds, I know it has 33/45 atleast. I am not home...

As a rule try and sample as close to what you need as possible. When it comes to pitching down or timestretching a sample, it's easy to introduce artifacts which ultimately sound wack!

That's why sampling from a deck is king. If you have an 8 or 16% range then try and stick to it as this will sound more organic compared to the studio twonkery you can achieve in a computer.

I suppose I should hunt for a cheap-o table with broad speed settings.

Im savin up to get my main peice of gear first.... the MPC5000 along with some headphones (gotta have sound)... then not to long later; maybe a month so i can at least learn how to play out melodies on the pads, ima get a midi controller keyboard.

ID watch out with that 5000 heard alot of bad things about it

by the time i grab one tho it should be close to bug free. hopfully around the novemberish area. But im also thinkin bout jus gettin a 4000 for around 1500 and the prophet 08 synth or poly evolver...
