bit depth wouldn't have been the problem - the MPC will only play 16-bit samples. period.
I've never done it, but from reading other peoples posts on here with people having similar problems, the MPC will manage to playback different sample rates (ie 33khz, 48khz, etc) but in doing so will play back at the wrong speed. If you are familiar with the actual processes behind digital sampling, then you would understand why.
Anway, all I'm getting at here is that bit depth and sample rate are not the same thing, and sample rate is likely the culprit behind your problem.
Mount your MPC drive and read the files from your computer, then check their properties to check the sample rate. I'm willing to bet that they are 16-bit samples, but the sample rate is something lower than 44khz, which is why they are playing faster.
