Machines don't make beats, people do. As we all know 'Machines have no soul'.

The MPK isnt even a synth, its a midi controller. Keys, sliders, buttons and knobs in a nice case. Thats it.

So the question you really need to ask is "Am I any good with making beats?"

But from seeing what the MPK49 is capable of its pretty neat but it does not work without a computer. It has no where to store memory and thats where the PC comes in. It has no internal sounds like an MPC and you cant sample with the MPK49, youd have to sample on a DAW or software then get the wav sound and put it into the MPK49 thru a USB cable.

Overall its pretty sick cuz the pads feel pretty good for the price and so do the keys plus all the added knobs and appregaiter.

what should i start off with then

I been at it for close to 3 months now. I started with the MPC500. I love my 500 but I wish that I could of waited a bit longer for the 1000 just for the JJOS.

So if I was you Id go with a 1000 or 500.

i love my 2kxl. very user friendly. very simple to use. not as many bells and whistles as the 1k jjos, but is a very sturdy machine. pads dont need to be replaced like the 1k.look into it

Only the blue and red 1k needs pad replacements. If you buy a 1k make sure you get a black one which is the new version and you wont have to replace the pads.

How much did you pay for the 2kxl???

i paid $1100 for the 2kxlmcd brand new, out of guitar city.

If you're using comp with plugs and soft-synths then the MPk will do, If you starting from scratch pick up a 1k

I use an M-Audio Axiom 49 but I hear good things about the MPK-49. Just Blaze has said it's the best MIDI controller he's ever used.

Not true. The first black units did in fact have the same faulty pads.

I got one the day after I read his post. Even though I had been looking into it for a while, his word seald the deal for me. And I have to agree it is amazing. Its keys have a unique but good feel to them.

I havent used any other midi controller, but the mpk is a beast. Midi map to your favorite vsyth and daw and have a blast

I have been looking at the MPK for a while now. I want a dedicated Midi Controller and it seems to fit the bill really nicely.


BUT, I have an older Casio workstation that has a built in sequencer as well..... It gets the job done for now, but it is very big. I got it at a Pawn shop for like $40. It is has MIDI General so it has worked well for me up to now. I do not need anything else, but it is huge so I want something a bit smaller.

I am mentioning this because you can accomplish things with older/cheaper pieces. I can spend a ton of money, but because I am new to this, I create garbage..... The equipment may enable you to do alot of things, but you have to know what you want to do in order to do it.



Do your research and make it all count. I don't think you can go wrong with the MPC 500, and if you got the dough, get the 1k... I think that is the best $900 I have spent in a long time....... I can spend hours on the 1k without taking a break.

Yeah the 500 holds up very well. Check the 500 forum section and you will notice that alot of us are happy with the 500. Also to mention that the we have alot of people who downgraded their MPC and are still happy with the 500.
