For bass it's not necessery having 64 notes, but other stuff...
My piano/ organ and other programs carrying 64 samples. And you don't need them all at the same time, but when u use them as TEMPLATES (a program with presets) it is pretty handy when u have the maximum amount of notes availible right away. I just load in a piano program whenever I need keys, play different octaves, try to match and then record it after finding the right tone and pitch.
RexRhino, I used to do it the same thing as u described it, but this works best for me. But the concept is the same: assign the same samples to different pads in the same program, and set a different pitch for every individual pad.
