Live Drums

Ive been feening to get an electronic drum set,But id like to know if I were to get one,would i be able to record what i play into my mpc and make beats with it?

ANybody use live drums?

Also,exactly WHAT do i need so that i can have more memory on my 1000?

For as far as I know, you can't use an electric drum kit to program ur drums in your mpc as a sequence. This is only possible if these kits work with midi. Most of the kits work with other type of signals wich aren't compatible with the mpc's (midi) sequencer.

But you can sample the drum kits' output, chop it up and reprogram it if you want to.

For your memory question I don't know what you want. If you want to expand your sample memory, you need to buy a RAM upgrade for the mp. Just google expandeble RAM memory for the Akai MPC.
If you want to expand your storage memory you can go to any electro shop and buy those compact flash type 2 cards. MPC supports cards up to 2 gig, but it's said on the forum bigger cards can do the job as well.
But then I would recommend you to install the harddisk. Just a normal 2,5" laptop harddisk. For that you only need a diskmount to install. You can purchase them at every musicstore for like $25.

All electronic drumsets I've encountered (excluding analog) use midi, so yes, you can program sequences form the drums. I have done this with an Alesis DM Pro and some pads many times. Its a great way to add a human feel to your sequences.

yeahs i need the memory so im able to hold lots of samples on my mpc and be able to chop whenever i want without worrying about running out space.shit is annoying.

so i need to cop a ram,2.5 harddisk...25$at most...thats a great deal considering the prices in the stickied threads

Harddisk and ram memory are 2 different things. You can have an X Gigabyte harddisk but only 128 mb RAM max.

You'll have to load samples/programs/sequences from harddisk (or memory card) into ram to use them.

You definitely need the maximum 128 mb ram. Harddisk en HDkit are optional. Alternative: you can choose a Flashrom card instead : 2 Gig voor 40 euro (60 US dollars?)

I don't need more.

You can sample ANYTHING that makes noise.

Didn't know that I had the same question a few months ago, and almost everyone told me these kits don't work with midi. Next time I post a question on this forum before asking me friends the so called experts.

Its the drum triggers on their own that wont work with the mpc (because they're peizo electrical)but the "brain" that comes with most of those kits interprets the electrical pulses created when you hit the pads, and triggers the internal sounds and midi notes.As mentioned in the thread these midi notes can be used to trigger mpc sounds but without the "brain" you'll be stuck.

just to clarify..as far as i can see that guy is using a drum kat(just to the right of his hihat).. the triggers will be plugged into the drum kat and this will send midi to the mpc.

the real reason i have always loved the mpc's: when u touch a pad, the sound comes out NOW, not in 15ms...or 40ms..these delays have to do with the serial communication of midi spec: the more stuff you put in the pipeline, the more delay in reception on the other end, especially with a long cable....these delays , or, 'midi latencies' , cause far more timing lags and only can be fixed with quantization, or by adjusting your DAW or Hardware sequencer's midi-in timing-offset (dont know how to do it on mpc1000, i ALWAYS use an offset when recording midi into logic


i'd use the pads on the mpc, with tc off, for a more accurate 'human performance', than ever using some midi controller.

like primebeats said, "midi sucks" . it's just a damn necessary evil at this point....
