identify repressed vinyl

how do you know if an album is a repress? i mean i copped an album, the sleeve looks to have some wear, and the vinyl is great. there is also a notch cut out of the open side, which i see on a lot of originals and not new vinyl.

but is there any way to id the year of pressing? i know that they are rereleasing a ton of old school joints, but i thought this was og with the notch and the wear.

so does anyone know if there is a way to tell?

im sure people can offer more advice but heres mine:

if the inner of the sleeve has gone brown its more likley old - if its bright white its def a repress -

does it smell a little funky? - if so probably original.

of course check for dates on the sleeve and record itself - the date on the record/sleeve could be the date of repress.

If theyre represses sometimes the sleeve is printed badly, some look a little lo-res and they dont always line up with the sleeve all that well.

notch means it was a promo - it was a way of defacing them so that they couldnt be sold off on the sly - sometimes a little hole punched out - sometimes a little rectangle, sometimes a whole corner - dude in a record shop told me that some drilled through the sleeve and record itself.

hope that helps - i cant think of anything else, you can usually just tell if its repressed or not.

This is exactly why I say OGs aren't worth a sh*tload of money if there is a repress. If you pay $200.00 for an OG that's really a repress you feel cheated, but if you paid $9.00 for an OG you thought was a repress you think you came up and in actuality, you getting the same music. In the end, OGs of a re-pressed record only give you "bragging rights" to noone who really cares. I've tried/tested OG vs re-presses side-by-side and if there is any difference in sound quality, it is so minor it's nothing. I have nothing but OGs, but I also have 5 to 10 re-presses total in my whole collection (mostly JB), and noone asks/cares where or how it's pressed when I burn a CD for 'em. I say just enjoy the music because if you just started diggin'/collecting records in nineteen ninety whatever, originals are nice to get but don't think it's gonna make or break you as a DJ/producer.

As for your question, most old records do have brown inside the jacket. Also look @ serial numbers and barcodes (originals almost never have a barcode...who heard of a barcode in the 70's???). The notch cut means nothing. I can easily notch cut a $9.99 Skull Snaps LP, scuff up the cover a lil' bit and call it an original pressing, record in mint condition.

thanks for the replies. ive been got online with the re press thing. they advertised it as og, but the shit came sealed with the 180 gram label. on top of that, there was a little "tag" on the record itself that i had to pull off and it skips now.

as far as og vs. re press, i am trying to collect og's for the most part. i bought a repress because i wanted to hear the music, but am still looking for the og if i can find it.

as far as bragging rights, im to old for that ish . its a personal thing. the ogs have a history that comes with them. they travelled who knows where only to land in my collection. which when i type it sounds funny, but still, thats my reason.

i called a local record shop and she said kind of the same thing you guys said. also fyi, you probably know, but she said to check the record label. she said sometimes the original company who pressed it the first time will buy out another company and stamp the new name on it.

the date on this record actually says 1975, which is the original release date, but so did the repress that was represented as og. im going to take this thing down to the shop this weekend and let her tell me what she thinks if i cant find anything online.

sound , the sound on a repress or issue sound tinny not full sound.

the brown white innner jacket thing too.
also check the cat# on the album get a record guide and read up on this ,most record COLLECTORS have these and live by them,it's good to have in hand at times

on bootleg the sound will be bad, if it's a official re-press it should sound the same if pressed from the same master tapes. many times they do re-master them to sound better, but it ain't the original anyways

you can pick them up at Barnes ,any book store just find a recent copy or ask one of the guy's tha one of your local record show they will tell you what to get,more or less.

i have a goldmind4th edition, but theres better .

make sure it aint a digital remaster those are worth bank and the sound on those areoutstanding. those usually have a yellowish sticker on them
