in my experience its more a case of, the owner(s) have a problem with people listening to the records, and these aren't really "highend" records, more pretty standard stuff priced at like £10....just their attitude problem

i can guantee you that some of those rare arerecords that have certian things that will make them sell for more money but never do,

stuff like the letters being on the left then the right, a gun pointing at henry's head then the words like the reissue,
as you get more into it you will see what i'm talking about, pick up a price guide and scam thru it and see that makes some of these records so pricey some times.

it's not a sure method but people buy what they want .

Look for unicorns,goblins,rainbows,leprachauns, anything that sparks an interest. Normally anything of this nature has good sampling material. The best example of this is Elton John's Capt Fantastic, its some bangers on there. Get it if you can or youtube it!

Blind digging as you call it is part of digging. Thats what dollar/discount bins are for. You can learn about a lot of different genres and dope shit you would of never heard before. So yea, years, covers, labels, musicians help navigation. I wouldn't spend more than 10 bucks blindly (without knowing anything about the album or artist). Sampling/digging has led me into a wide world of music that I would of never known about if I wasn't looking for samples. But to me its trully about discovering and listening to good music.

The PT-01 is my main turntable and I didn't buy it for the reason most do. I haven't taken it diggin with me once but my reason ain't the same as the dude above who said he goes on a spur-of-the-moment thing. I just can't be that dude in the vinyl spot with a fold-up turntable listenin to records like that. It's not me. If they have listenin stations there, cool, I'll use those. But as far as bringin my own shit.. nah, it bothers me. I'm too self-conscious for that.

People see the word "portable" and ignore the fact that records are still pretty big - you're standin there with a box and a fat pair of headphones or whatever. If anything, the fact that it's so uncomfortable probably nullifies the whole point of portable turntables to be honest. I got mine solely for the price.

I've bought some horrible shit in the past but at the same time, it's an EXCHANGE. I could come back next week with 5 'frisbees' and have lost 50p in total, it's not a problem.

I also know how many records I've chosen just off visual curiosity that played their part in some of my best beats. I don't think you're at any real disadvantage just guessing still.

I went diggin with the ION portable turn with a fellow producer yesterday..Hmmm..i didn't go even close to the dollar bins and start listening to some obscure oriental stuff..I finally got 6 vinyls..they weren't cheap but had certified quality inside The only thing i felt strange about when i came home,was the fact that i've already knew what i'm gonna listen to..didn't have any suprises..not bad either haha! I think that i'ma keep a balance on picking records..balance between my instict and auditioning and my pockets of course ha!

you guys arent listening long enuff, the point is to buying a record, take it home and LISTEN!!!! not scam thru it and look for samples, samples come to you when you listen thru the hole song or album.

i have a handytrax and i rarely use it..i have been digging long enough to know what records are going to sound like...if i am in a charity shop or a thrift store i will maybe take my portable but most of the time its too heavy (well not really!) for me to carry when that extra weight could be records!

I will buy whatever i find and take home a big stack every time i go out and listen to all of the lp's all the way through when i get home!!

Handry Trax is great. If I wasn't afraid of it getting ruined by the extreme heat and cold I'd never take it out of my trunk.

As for listening to the whole thing -- I do -- when I get home. Every record I bought I bought 'cause there was at least one good thing on there I could flip or use while DJing. I don't have to look at my record collection like some people and say -- oh, that crate is shit.

same here...i think it can be good to listen before you buy but i really love the suprise and feeling of satisfaction when you discover a dope lp you know...when im on the tube or bus home with the records i always look at them wondering what im going to hear and its still exciting every single day!! and it always will be!

It's no less exciting with a portable turntable. It's not like I'm playing the whole LPs . . . only parts of a few cuts to see what I'm getting into.
