Hi guys, Got this mpc 5000 last weekend after almost 10 years with the MPC 2000 (classic). I don't know why but it keeps freezing on me . Like 2 t 3 times in a 4 hour session. It happens mostly when I 'm on the disk section ( saving. loading, scrolling). Should I go exchange it? I mean , in the past week i've only been able to save 1 beat!! which I lost ,btw, since I was trying to reconstruct the folder it was saved in.

Thanks!!

I save to CF card.... I save programs and sounds then all seq. But my main problem is that I don't even get there. Just now, I've been working from about an hour and while I was searching for sounds it's jammed!! That's been hapenning everyday since I got it!! Do I really have to save every 10min?
I don't get it ... I never ever ever had that problem with a 10 year old MPC!!

not really sure what the deal is, the only lag i've ever had with the machine is when i try to load one specific folder from one of my sound DVDs.

If you're saving a considerable amount of stuff to the CF at one time, that may be what's causing the lag...personally i'd wait til i was done my session and than "save entire memory"

I'd also not really save to the CF. I'd save to the drive and keep a specific autoload folder so it only loads what you want rather than the default stuff from the Rom Flash. I'm no expert, i haven't been using the 5k long myself but that's just what works for me. I'd save everything on HD, then specific songs onto the CF.

Also, it'll put more stress on the mp if you're saving the songs and seq WITH samples....but at this stage in the game, that shouldn't even be a problem...aside from all that, i'm not sure whats going on. good luck dude

lol.... i can really feel your pain here, the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, I havent used hard like that since then... I had a MPC 2000XL SE loaded.... and when you try to audition samples, it will end up jamming, especially if you try to audition the sample while the beat is going, trying to play along with it(i know that could stress the machine now). But that is one of the updates we are hopefully waiting on

This is truly and issue Shirley, you arent doing anything wrong that the MPC 5000 is supposed to handle.

And this is by saving to the Hard Drive for me.... I dont even really use CF's with the 5000

4dahaterz is right...but we can all agree the 5k acts gay at times. it also freezes up on me at times when auditioning samples, which i will go to my grave saying should have an auto-mode rather than having to press F5 EACH AN EVERY SINGLE **** TIME.

but you might wanna take it back to where you got it and tell them the issue.

Also, just a thought:

the mpc can work with CompactFlash II cards up to 2GB.

However, i use the CF III card, 2GB. maybe the type of card you're using is a issue. i recommend Lexar or SanDisk.

no guarantees, just suggestions.

lol.... maybe like 8 times.... my biggest problems were in the save and load area, at a time when I was in a rush at that

Had like 2 or 3 freeze since i have it. ( more than 2 month now ) Im working about 3 hours a day with it.

Every freezes i had were when importing samples. i did reformat my HD since & now i don t have any.

Maybe you need to re-format your CF & Hard drive using the MPC disc menu.

Fellas, I'm not trying to brag. I do feel lucky. I have not had one crash since I got my mpc5k. Some glitches yes. I commend you on being patience with your purchase. Believe me, if I had as many crashes as you guys. I would have box that mutha up and we would have took a 15 minute ride to my guitar center and I been walking out there with a new mpc5k under my arms. If guitar center didn't have one in stock. I would have told them to order me another mpc5k or return my money.

I can put up with a crash here and there, fine. But, crashes when I'm trying to save my work makes the mpc5k unusable. I figured if akai get enough shipments of open boxes of mpc5k to be refurbish. We soon get a new os update or they put a quailfied inspector to check every unit before they close the box to be ship. I don't care if shipment came to squeeching halt and akai was only shipping a 50 to 100 units a day. Then that's a hundred consumer with a stable mpc5k.

You should not have to figure out a way to avoid crashes on your mpc5k.

Well... I know I go hard with Equipment, meaning, the people I work with, and around dont do nonthing but produce music all day... for about the last month, I have kinda slowed down because my 5000 freezes and problems at my own personal studio(A/C being Stolen) that I experienced... yeah, i understand its still early in the OS's, but like next week, because im behind on work and deadlines, Ill have to go hard again, and I can promise you, I will be mad about something just as soon as I get to work and it starts acting up again.

Does anyone have problems with the jog wheel, how when you use it to scroll through stuff it lags? my mpc 5k has been freezing up too. I've tried contacting akai but the don't reply back and it's been about 2 months. has anybody upgraded it with the memory expan.? cuz I've heard on a different forum that this guy installed the mem. and when he started it up the thing started smoking and he had to return it cuz it melted the pin holes. I hope that it isn't bad componets that's making these things freeze up!?!?!?
