Program-wide volume Control?

Hey guys-

I am fairly a new user to the MPC world, coming from an all-PC based sequencing background. I have been perusing the forum for a couple weeks now, and this fountain of knowledge has been an indispensable resource for me, and I greatly appreciate that.

I have searched and searched and read the manual, but I am honestly just more confused than before, and I really need help with this.

I am currently using JJ 1. I have no problem mixing at the pad level for drum samples, but for actual melodic instrument patches and such, I have still not found a reliable way to adjust the volume for the entire program. Surely, there must be a way to do it, though?

I would really appreciate any help anyone is willing to offer up. I have read a lot of threads based on this topic, but they seemed to go in many directions, and it was hard to pick out a clear answer. Anyway, thanks for your help and patience.

if so, enter GPE and hit WHOLE, then move to the LEVEL column and pull it down

Ah yes. I had looked there many times, but I guess I missed it. I was expecting it under the "Sample" window, but I guess "Out" makes a lot more sense when it comes down to it.

there are two spots where you can attentuate your samples, both found in GPE: one is at the PGM level in the sample screen (hit WINDOW, then use the WHOLE button in the subscreen that pops up) or the mixer LVL option i mentioned previously.

the PGM level one is per sample assigned. the mixer level one is per pad per program.
they both have their independent uses.

Not quite clear on what you mean here...

Do you mean that if you assigned a sample to more than one pad, adjusting the PGM level will lower the volume of said sample on all the pads it is on, whereas adusting the mixer level will simply lower that pad?

I guess it's really only the first part I don't understand: "per sample assigned"

here is an "exploded" view of what's on pad 01 in GPE. note: LVL field. that's "per sample" per pad. you can assign 3 samples on the pad, and attenuate them separately.



here is the view of the mixer from within GPE. NOTE: LVL is per pad. turning down this LVL option turns down the entire PAD all at once, all of the levels of all of the samples on all of the layers.

PGM LVL: attenuate layers separately
MIX LVL: attenuate pad collectively

I have to make sure I understand this correctly.

In JJ OS1:
The only way to change the overall balance between Programs (and because of that between Tracks in sequences) is the GPE>OUT>Whole method?

In Akai OS:
I can only change the overall balance between Programs (and Tracks) by going to each Pad in a Program and edit it's level. /A lot of work!

In JJ OS2:
I haven't tried this one, are there any new features regarding Program level there?

yeah there's a track mixer screen which will affect the volume of whatever program is on any given track - so it is in essence a simplified version of selecting WHOLE on an entire program but is instead set track-by-track
