red and blue vs. black pads

i own an mpc500 and im looking to upgrade to the 1000. i know there was a problem with the pads on the 1000 but i was wondering if that was only on the blue and red mpc's or on the black ones as well. i like the blue and red color, and i see em alot on craigslist and ebay, but im not sure if all blue and red ones have defective pads, or just a number of them. if the better pads are only on the black, then i would buy the black for sure.

I honestly don't know the difference. I see this get asked a lot around here but I don't think there's ever really been a clear answer. Wish I could be of more help

Some of the first black also have bugs on them pads. The "new" black ones has been fixed.

I had bugs on them pads once. I must have left some Pop Tart crumbs on there.

I thought that if the MPC had the number MPC1000BK-N then it was with the new pads, 'N' meaning 'new', as in it dosn't have the old shifty pads.

Yep, for the one billionth time then hopefully we can lock this puppy and learn to use the search function for stuff that's already saturating the archives --

All of the old pre-Akai Japan bankruptcy blue and reds had the unstable pad design. When the new Akai US took over the only thing they did at first was to change the color to black and they just went right on selling the same defective design even though both the old and new Akai must have known the stuff was junk.

Later, they changed to the black painted back panel and finally (and quietly so as avoid responsibility) changed the pads back to the same proven design that every other MPC has used before or since.

I'm not sure about that serial number stuff, I've heard some contradictions about that on here, but there's plenty of info on the forum about how to spot the difference if you have hands on access.
