I just got a 3000 and the kicks are really punchy but they arent really loud in the mix at all. Even when Im layering the kicks they still just dont seem to be loud at all. Whats the deal here? I could get the kicks mad loud in the mpc 2500 but i cant get them loud on the 3000. I mean i tried setting the velocity to 200% but then when I record the kick kinda sounds like its distorted a little bit.

How do you guys go about sampling your kicks into the 3000?

could be a bunch of problems:

bad monitors

bad source material

are you sampling in or converting wavs and importing

what do you have your sample level set to in the back. Ive never known anyone to ever have a problem with the way kicks sound in the 3000. You should not have to compensate at all with this machine it does not lack in the sound department on ANY level. PM me after you've tried to trouble shoot and I'll help you out as much as I can. Im shure you're just preciving the machines overall warmth as lack a hardness in its drums.

Peace

I find I get a better sound with the 3000 sampling on low, and really pushing the gain. Then change the Volume to 200%. You should have no problems making it knock.

Yup run your gain on Low captures everything better.

I really feel like when I sample on low I dont get the sound loud enough. I feel like i dont get the "true" sound. I never tried setting the volume to 200 on the samples tho. Maybe Ill give it a try....

Does everybody who has a 3000 sample on low?

i dont. i sample as loud as poss. but you have to manange your sample levels. if i sample a kick at say -0.3db and a music sample at -0.3db, when i play these together the kick is gonna struggle for dominance. so what u gonna do? if you turn up the kick level in the edit screen your gonna clip and distort it. so you have to turn your music sample down.

With the gain switch set to low, you can crank the volume up from the sample source, so the mpc itself wont clip. With med or hi setting, it's hard to overdrive the sample without clipping. He didnt mean that you try sampling with low volume.

Yeah I'm gonna try sampling at low gain next time and sample it as loud as possible without clipping and then turn the velocity to 200% in the sample edit screen. Also when I'm sampling at medium gain I'm getting a little bit of noise in the background of the samples from my computer and\or mixer which Im sampling out of. When I sample on low gain I dont get noise at all...

Which sample gain setting do you think is closest to what the 2000xl or 2500 sample gain is? Since you cant set the sample gain on those machines, which setting do you think those machines are set to in relation to the 3000's sample gain?? Im curious because I just switched over from a 2500 to the 3000, and I could crank the gain on my mixer when I was sampling into the 2500 but when I sample into the 3000 on medium gain setting I cant crank my mixer at all!! So my guess is that the 2500 sample gain is just like the "low" setting on the 3000..

Another good tip that I got (from Waajeed actually!) is to put all the kicks that you layer on seperate tracks. That way when you record into the computer you have total control over all the layers of the kick. Anybody else do it this way? I used to just put all the kick layers on the same track but I think this new tip seems like a great idea!

If the different kickdrum samples are assigned to different outputs it shouldn't matter. :?:

Thanks for the tip about the gain switch, i am going to try mine on 'low' and check the difference.

Why turn the kick up to 200 in the sample screen? That may cause clipping.

Why don't mix all your other things down? I have been doing that for years and it works dope, the MPC has low noise itself, so it's not a problem.

It often end up like this in the mixer: Kicks 100, Snares 75, hi hats 20, bass 30, samples maybe 30-60. Still the mix level out of the stereo out is hot enough (I can't have it on max without getting red all over whatever I'm recording into).

so you leave your record gain to low?

Well it depends are you loading drum sounds or sampling breaks?
