Elegant 2,5" Harddisk For Your MPC

Hi there,

some of you might be interested in using a quiter, less power
demanding and heat producing harddisk in your MPCs.

This model works flawless:
- Western Digital Scorpio WD1200 VE/BEVE (120 MB)

These models don't work:
- Fujitsu MHV 2040 AH (40 GB)
- Samsung Spinpoint Series HM080GC (80GB)

Unfortunately, I started with the last two mentioned, but now
the WD Scorpio is running fine. Be aware that Quick Format takes
several minutes!

Just get your 3,5"-->2,5" adapter and have fun.

Hello TSR!

If the power requirement is different(lower) will this "adapter" you speak of also make up for the voltage difference(up/dn)?
Is the power connector a molex?

Which adapter did you use? Brand, type? Where did you buy it?

It's no rocket science. I have used an adapter similar to this one:

It's really plug and play. To my best knowledge, 2,5" disks only need
the 5V voltage in contrast to 3,5" disks which both need 5V and 12V
voltage signal, but you don't need to care too much about this technical stuff.

You just need some additional mounting racks to fix the smaller 2,5" disk.

Thanks for the info TSR. I understand completely where you are coming from but...

The reason I am concerned about the "technical stuff" is that since this MPC is no longer supported,
experimenting with it, unlike an inexpensive PC, can accidently ruin vital parts and can be quite costly! I've seen this happen where users are simply adding upgrades. The Main PCB alone is over $700 not including labor costs. There are several PCB's as I am sure you are aware of.

It's a good idea, but at the risk of burning a board out, and it happens(read this 4000 forum alone) maybe users should
just utilize the USB port.

I absolutely understand your position. Possibly damaging a
running MPC (with optimisation in mind) is a very high price
to pay.

In case of the harddisk, I wouldn't worry too much, since
the 3,5"-->2,5" IDE adapters are standardised in the sense
that they actually physically connect pin-by-pin, without any
further "special electronics parts".

Usually, the disks run - or don't. There shouldn't be any
fiddling at all.

Nevertheless, I'm very happy after replacing the fan and the
harddisk. The 4K became as silent as I was hoping for. Now,
that the system is running, it's good to know that the new disk
also preserves the power supply and decreases total heat
production.
