zip drives

Could someone tell me if the internal zip 250 is better than the external zip and if the external offers more memory. I was told that the internal zip did not function well with the mpc2000xl. Holla back

There can be a problem with internal 250MB drives (although not in my experience, I've installed two different ones with no problem)

An IDE zip is a lot slower than a SCSI external (a lot!).

As far as memory goes, zips have nothing to do with memory.

As far as memory goes you have as much as the ZIP has on it so a 250 has more space than a 100.
Interestingly enough I use an external ZIP 100 drive as I bought my MPC waaaay before they came with a ZIP drive as standard and therefore can only use 100 Meg disks, and rarely have trouble but a friend uses a IDE 250 and he has loads of trouble with his - stuff like he has to power on 10 minutes before loading the disk for some unexplained reason.

No offense meant but this is a real pet peeve of mine. Memory is the wrong word to use here; it confuses people. The word you want in this example is storage. A zip drive (or any other drive) provides storage space for your files. Memory references internal sample memory, which will always be limited to whatever sample memory a particular sample has (32MB for the XL). Memory is usually volatile, meaning whatever is in it goes away when you power down the sampler. That is why you need storage, so you can save your files someplace and then load them back into memory when you power the sampler on again.

You cannot expand the sample memory by using SCSI drives. I've had to explain this to people maybe 1000 times. Buying a 9GB hard drive will not give you 9GB of sample memory; it will give you 9GB of external storage space. No matter how many MB, GB or TB of storage space you have, you'll still only be able to load 32MB of sounds, sequences, whatever into the MPC2000XL sampler at the same time.

didn't realise it was an old thread - new to forum.
I hear ya with the 'memory' thing - i'm an electronic engineer by trade so I shouldn't use the term either as I know better but sometimes it's easier than explaining the difference.
