Kawai K5000S: Absolutely, I heard very good things about the keyboard before I bought it, was able to check it out first, and was not disappointed. It's my "master" keyboard, even though it can't do MIDI splits or layers. (The K5000S synth engine does that, but the keyboard sends one channel only.)

It will be years before I get the most out of this synth, programming is a real job, but I still have drastic real-time sound modification possibilities with the panel knobs... oh yeah, back to the original question: very versatile for bass sounds too, from a simple sine wave to modulated nightmares in Bb minor.

Useful for popping the cones of your speakers (and ears) across the room as well if not careful w/ the resonance knob.....

To keep this slightly on topic: Try creating sounds with percussive envelope on your other gear and layer them with "regular" drum sounds on your MPC. Even quite "weak" sounds (low volume, filtered stuff etc) can add unique flavour to your kit, and the layer function of the MPC is key. A low bass note, in key with your tune, layered with the kick can add necessary omph to your track, and sizzle and fizzle from vinyl can add crunch to snares.

Also, don't forget to exploit velocity layers: Sample a short snare burst, and layer it with a full snare sound, keep the short sample over the full velocity range and adjust the full snare to start sounding just above the velocity of your note repeats. This will enable you to add small "ghost" hits with note repeat to your groove...
