mpc2kXL 12 bit, 20 khz, what does it sound like?

I've wondered, what does the converted sound sound like compared to the original.

Does it sound like a sp-1200 or like straight up shit?

It doesn't sound like a SP that's for sure but it can make a difference and give it a bit more dirt.

Right, I really just added the "does it sound like an sp" to emphesize the whole thing.

I've used a sp-12 back in the days, then got an emax. Those two didn't even sound the same.

But I'm still curious about the sounds that come outta the 2000xl in 8-12 bit and less samp rate.

I hoped that somebody from this forum would post a comparison.


By the way, is it only the XL that has this feature?

Hell naw! HAHA The resampling feature on the XL TAKES FOREVER! This is the main reason why this function is often overlooked. It works fairly well on REALLY short samples, drums, but even in that case, I highly recommend that you delete any extra "air" off the samples before you try it. The results are actually much better than the 2500 with JJ, but it's the wait time that turns so many people away from using it. You can almost get SP-1200/S950 type of sound out of it, but you have to know frequencies and Hz to get the right tones out the sounds. It's not as easy as putting in "12bit, 22000hz" (or whatever) even though that's exactly what you are entering. I've tried it a few times before, and entering the SP-1200's specs didn't give me SP-1200 results..it actually chipmunked the sound more than anything, but it requires a lot of trial and error. Take a day off work and school. The processing time will take a while!
Just buy an EMAX-1/S950 and adjust the sample rates in there.

If I mess with my 2kxl in the near future, I'll post a comparision. I wont resample whole loops but I could resample individual drum hits at different rates an put them in a basic sequence.

12bit isnt exactly what gives the sp12 its sound. its the converter chips. which is why they dont make the sp12 anymore. they ran out of the original chips. they actually re-released the sp twice. then stopped making it when the chips were all gone. those chips are what gives a unit its "character". which is also why the different models of mpc sound different.

OK I did it. I liked the way it made the snare hit on a lot of these, didnt like the hats or kicks on a lot of these. Besides sequence 1 and 2 (sampling specs of 2kxl and sp1200) , all these are just random numbers I punched in.
sequence 1- 44100hz 16 bit
2- 22000hz 12 bit
3- 55100hz 8bit
4- 18800hz 8bit
5- 45600hz 12 bit
6- 49100hz 8bit
then I played each individual drum hit in the same order

The 8bit sounds like crap on any sampler, but the 12bit sounds good. I like it better than the 2500. The 2500's bit reduction sounds too artificial to me, but I still use it. I actually like the lo-fi mode in the SP-303/404 too.
