I started just like you. I had no idea, nor did I have friends around me to fill me in.... But lickily you found US.
First things first.... The 500 is a great device as is the 1000. They will both get you where you want to go. I am a hobbyist as well, and when I went to get my first MPC, I was going for the 500 because I was new, and wanted new. The 500 was cheaper and would have been lees of a hit on the pockets if I did not stick with it..... But Sam Ash was out of new ones. All they had was the display and a bunch of new 1000. I played with both and felt as though the 1000 felt more ?Mature?..... It just had a little more heft/feel to it. So in essence Sam Ash and the feel of them made the decision for me.
The 1000 has more functionality to it, so for me it turned out to a much better buy in the long run. I will not NEED to upgrade for years to come.
When I got it home, all I had was my CPU sound system, a 2 channel mixer, audacity, and a TT. And that is all I needed at that point. I still use the CPU 5.1 surround system, but I got a better Mixer, a Casio Workstation, and I just added Pro Tools. As a beginner too many devices would overwhelm you. So start slo and work your way up.
I am glad I went with the 1000 over the 500 at this point, because I have not run into any limitations on my 1000 as of yet..... But buy what you can afford. And remember you are the one that is going to be using it, not us. Keep asking questions and researching so that you can make an informed decision.
Having a sound system is not very important in the beginning, a decent set of headphones will def get the job done.... I usually do most of my work through my headphones.
Also check out some youtube vids on both machines.... You may see something on a vid that helps you make the decision.....
