Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

so basically I searched and searched all over for a way to hear my keyboard thats connected to my mpc 2000xl and I still cannot find a way to make it work. I have independently spent hours with my mpc without any help just to see if I can figure it out on my own but obviously thats not working so I came here. Now I know how to connect them midi in and out etc. just the roland alpha juno 1 both in and out connected to the mpc and the mpc is connected to an amp then to my speakers. Tried many things and scrolled and pushed buttons in the midi/sync and tried pushing open window button everywhere but still no luck. Couldnt find good videos or steps listed so here I am. I would really appreciate it if someone can give me step by step instructions but also be specific, I read how your supposed to rotate the data wheel so the drums will be midi but when people say set up the connection and such the specific steps are not illustrated I appreciate it and im sorry I know this has probrably been asked before thanks. and lastly I have the manual and thats not working for me so you dont have to tell me that.

if you spent a few hours with that manual, youll see that it has an example of connecting external devices to your mpc. maybe you have more equipment than knowldge at this stage in time.

how are you planning on hearing the Juno's outputs, if you only have the mpc's outs hooked upto your speakers?

get a mixer, then check youtube for the numerous vids on connecting midi devices to your mpc.

so im guessing im missing a mixer set up step? I have a mixer but my turntables are hooked up to it and how do I connect the keyboard to the mixer and the mixer to the mpc? because I know the output of the mixer is in the record in for the mpc for the sampling part and I dont see how the mixer is going to make the mpc pick up the keyboard sounds cuz i dont want to record my keys I want to play it live while recording my sounds from the pads and stuff. appreciate it.

wow.

look at the diagram in the mpc 2k manual.

sample in on 2k/2kxl is only active in sample mode.

maybe you need another mixer or preamp.

Ai-ight G. I gotcha back like bucket seat....

First of all, ur turntable mixer aint the mixer u want in this situation. U need a channel mixer in the least. You got the science behind midi in and out BUT your MPC AND ur keyboard need to be hooked in to the mixer (i.e. channel 1 for the mp, ch. 2 for the keyboard). Then from the mixer to the amp or speakers. This completes the midid handshake. There's a video on youtube that Brutha Lithion posted, check it out. You can read the manual all day but the pictures do wonders this time....

Your turntable mixer is used to boost the line signal from the TT's to the MP to enable you to sample.

You also need to make sure ur keyboard is in Multi mode and you make one the slave and the other the master

u could use that dj mixer no worries, just hook both devices, mpc & juno to each of the line ins, and just switch each channel from phono.

That would create an audio loop when sampling, and you'd get feedback while in sample mode.

That's why I suggested a preamp, strictly for sampling and the dj mixer for it's normal purpose.

Unless mashapoo wants to disconnect cables every time when sampling.

Yeah Dat Lamp.

You makin more work for yourself. All of us who've been just one cable short or somethin know how much of a pain it is to continually switch wires. Get ya'self a dedicated preamp or mixer strictly for this and save ya self the heartache

watch the video son. and hook up the sound output from all your gear. midi is data only. your mp will never output your juno's sound.

alright thanks you guys appreciate it i didnt know just having midi cables connected to my mp and my keyboard wasnt enough, i thought as long as the mp is connected to an amp and speakers it would just send the sounds of the keyboard also because of the midi cable but iguess thats not how it is, but wont it be easier if midi cables worked as a data transfer and the mpc would pick up the sounds and send it through the amp so you can hear it? i mean the keyboard having to be connected to the mixer and mpc again its like come on its 2009 almost and midi was invented and not really changed since what the 80's maybe? i dunno thanks anyways take care.

Until you can come up with a universal transfer protocol for audio/data combined for pro audio gear, it is the way it is, just deal with it and adapt.

lmao...

Yamaha came up with one, but it never caught on 'cause they slacked off on driver developement: mLAN

We gave up.

MIDI just sends and transmits data about, amongst other things, what note to play, at what volume and for how long. It doesn't send or transmit any audio. It dates back to a time when it wasn't appropriate or even useful for such data and audio signals to share the same connection. In fact you could argue it still isn't! Why would you ever want to send MIDI through say an outboard compressor? Or, when would you ever went to send audio to say a MIDI controlled lighting rig? There is an argument for combining MIDI and digital audio as they are both digital protocols but as others have said no standard protocol has caught on. I suspect it's because nobody really needs one. MIDI has finished evolving, there's not really anything else we need it to do! At the end of the day the advantages of separate connections for MIDI, analogue audio and digital audio outweigh any combination thereof.

Also MIDI does more than analogue audio does. Audio is just that, an audible signal. MIDI can for example be used to change a patch, that's not a "sound" it's "data".

but wont it be easier if midi cables worked as a data transfer and the mpc would pick up the sounds and send it through the amp so you can hear it? i mean the keyboard having to be connected to the mixer and mpc again its like come on its 2009 almost and midi was invented and not really changed since what the 80's maybe? i dunno thanks anyways take care.

Well yeah but none of your gear is 2009 is it? An MPC2000 and an Alpha Juno? Various manufactures are doing away with MIDI and audio by sending both signals via USB. Although the MIDI protocol is still used it just doesn't come over the same wires.

MIDI and audio are just different things.
