This been bugging me for quite a while now, at first i thought it was a good thing, a few users wanted it and JJ introduced it.

But it **** sucks for me! Already got a bunch of sounds loaded, working, then load up another sound and i cant find it. Oh sure i could have remembered the name (a32-snare.wav or sth it was...), but while i looked for a fitting sound i found a couple of others i liked, i´ll just never use them because they are hidden deep inside my sample list. And i dont like assign to pad from load either because i never know in which track i was when i entered load, cant change the program i´m loading to.

sorry guys but I much prefer the list being alphabetical.
It seems to me that its way easier to remember the name of a sample than it is to find it in a haphazard list.

Have you tried using the undo seq key to assign samples in gpe? if you get one sample on a pad that is close(alphabetically) then you can use the undo seq key to assign that sample to any pad really quickly- from there you can switch to the other sounds that you want with a few jog wheel clicks.

making programs has never been quicker for me.

1,2,3 yes, no problem

10? no

what do you think about alpha order in programs?

i prefer alphabetical, but agree that it has caught me off guard. result - i have to name my samples better, including all the huge bunch of weirdly named oneshots that are just sitting on my hard drive. i recommend using bulkfilerenamer and just inserting a single sample-specific character in front of all of the samples in X folder.

example: i have a kick folder with say the following samples:

1kick47.wav
bigbass2.wav
kick1.wav
kick2.wav
strongkick.wav

after my renaming, i have the following:

k1kick47.wav
kbigbass2.wav
kkick1.wav
kkick2.wav
kstrongkick.wav

now if i peruse my samples, all my X samples will be grouped together.

Yes, that's def (probably best) way to go, sometimes I even go "further" and instead of assigning samples separately or with [whole] I just record them in one audio pass in specific order and then chopping with mpc, creating auto program and voila, if name is bumkit, sample named bumkit1.. is on pad1 and so on. Actually, pgm mode works so well that I don't have to know sample's name if it's assigned.

that's a great way of doing it, easily the best if you're sampling from your computer's long list of oneshots. i will remember that, thanks for the suggestion.

matter fact, now that i have 2 mpcs, i'll probably not even store 1shots in the onboard hard drive of my studio mpc - no point, since you can trigger them while seq is playing via PC, plus your sampleandchop solution will put them all in the right naming order. very very good.

meanwhile, this is very useful to have as well:

again, let me just say that alphabetized sample list has been an overall positive thing for me, though i understand firsthand how it can be disorienting, as any slight change in workflow invariably is - even if the end result is positive.

also, i have to say that though the intentions are clearly good, this poll is going to be misleading by nature, as this function is still relatively new and more people are going to be in the "not used to it" phase of dealing with it.

I think thats something different then "getting used" to sth. as i explained, its just not practical (at least for my workflow). Renaming all my samples would be an option, but i dont really want to go that route.

So whats the big advantage for having them alphabetic sorted? Is it for the guys loading up whole folders and then not finding what they want?

Alphabetical works for me because I sample everything off records with new sounds for each beat.

If its drums i might name them drxyz if its bass it might be bassxyz ..something to remind me where ive taken the original sample from. I only reuse samples if i decide to scrap a previous beat, and i dont have folders of individual hits/sample kits or whatever. If i decide to re-use something then the programs are most likely built from related sounds to start with. If im layering up drums or creating kits from multiple sources (e.g. a record that has a nice kick and snare but no hats) ..then ill delve back into a "half-used" program too.If i need hi hats for instance im more likely to use 5-15 hits from one or two sources rather than hihats from loads of different sources.
so even if i use loads of chops.. a lot of the samples will have similar names, and usually related to whatever instrument ive sampled in the first place.
but this is the clincher for me:

If i derive further chops etc from the parent sounds then the new sounds are grouped near the originals... and with the undo seq key are easily incorporated into an exisiting program.

on this note ive got to say that the recent program mode and undo key combination is extremely useful... i noticed a difference in the workflow when i started working on an os1 beat again cause id got used to the new features!

Perhaps an option in the Sample List to list in Alphabetical order or by most recently loaded. Don't know how hard this would be to implement, but might be good to have the option. :?:
