im having troubles syncing my mpc 2000xl with sonar 3.

Don't know how to set up midi clock syncing, or even to syn thru the audio cables from the 8 outs.

anyone have any articles or advice for me. it is driving me slowly insane as well.

donlong: while i'd advise reading the manual to figure out midi sync... i just thought i'd let you know that there is no such thing as syncing through audio cables... there would have to be a midi cable doing the syncing.

Setting up an Akai MPC for use with Pro Tools 7.x using MTC and MIDI Beat Clock.
There are multiple ways you can configure your MPC for use with Pro Tools. Listed below are the various ways you can accomplish this with various models of the MPC. To use this page most efficiently, scroll down until you find the instructions for the model that you own.

NOTES:
1) If using an Mbox or Mbox 2 Mini, a Digidesign MIDI I/O or third-party USB-MIDI interface must be installed on the computer for all of the listed configurations.
2) All of the configurations below require you to properly set the tempo in Pro Tools and in the MPC. For instructions on how to do this, see the instructions at the bottom of this page.
3) It is recommended to be on the latest version of the operating system for your MPC. This is required for the MPC2500 in order for it to use MIDI Time Code.

For triggering the MPC500 using MIDI Beat Clock with Pro Tools as the master device:
NOTE: (The only type of sync the MPC500 has and can use is MIDI Beat Clock.)
1) Use a MIDI cable to connect the MIDI OUT of your Digidesign hardware (or M-Audio if using M-Powered) to the MIDI Input of the MPC500.

In the MPC500:
2) Go to the "MIDI/Sync" menu.
3) Use the "Data" wheel to change the sync mode to “Slave”.

In Pro Tools:
4) Set your tempo in Pro Tools. (See instructions at the bottom of this page.)
5) Go to the Setup menu and choose MIDI Beat Clock. Check the boxes for "Enable MIDI Beat Clock" and the corresponding MIDI output port.
6) Press play. The MPC should now be playing along with Pro Tools.
NOTE: (Make sure that the value for bars, in the MPC, is NOT set to zero. If it is set to zero, it will not be triggered.)

For triggering the MPC1000 using MIDI Beat Clock with Pro Tools as the master device:
NOTE: (The only type of sync the MPC1000 has and can use is MIDI Beat Clock.)
1) Use a MIDI cable to connect the MIDI OUT of your Digidesign hardware (or M-Audio if using M-Powered) to one of the MIDI Inputs of the MPC1000.

In the MPC1000:

In the MPC2000/2000XL:
Go to the "MIDI/Sync" menu.
3) Set "Sync In" to the corresponding MIDI input port on the MPC.
4) Set "Mode" to "MIDI Time Code" and "Frame rate" to 30.
5) Press play on the MPC and it will now be waiting to receive MTC.

In Pro Tools:
6) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Peripherals…”. Click on the Synchronization tab and set “MTC Generator Port" to the corresponding MIDI output port.
7) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Session". Set "Time Code Rate" to 30 and check the box for "using MTC".
8) Press play in Pro Tools and the MPC should now be playing along with Pro Tools.
NOTE: (When using MTC, it is recommended to add 1 or 2 bars of pre-roll.)

For triggering Pro Tools using MTC with the MPC2000/2000XL as the master device:
1) Use a MIDI cable to connect the MIDI OUT of your MPC to the MIDI In of your Digidesign hardware (or M-Audio if using M-Powered).

In Pro Tools:
2) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Peripherals…”. Click on the Synchronization tab and verify that “MTC Reader Port" is set to Any.
3) Put Pro Tools online by pressing the online button to the left of the stop button on the transport at the top of the edit window. This will be verified by a blinking blue online button.

In the MPC2000/2000XL:
4) Go to the "MIDI/Sync" menu.
5) Set "Sync Out" to the corresponding MIDI output port on the MPC.
6) Set "Mode" to MIDI Time Code. Set "Frame rate" to 30.
7) Press play on the MPC and Pro Tools should now be playing along to the MPC.
NOTE: (When using MTC, it is recommended to add 1 or 2 bars of pre-roll.)

For triggering the MPC2500 using MIDI Beat Clock with Pro Tools as the master device:

5) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Peripherals…”. Click on the Synchronization tab and set “MTC Generator Port" to the corresponding MIDI output port.
6) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Session". Set "Time Code Rate" to 30 and check the box for "using MTC".
7) Press play in Pro Tools and the MPC should now be playing along with Pro Tools.
NOTE: (When using MTC, it is recommended to add 1 or 2 bars of pre-roll.)

Setting your tempo in Pro Tools.
You can do this by either of the following methods:
1) Go to the “View” menu, highlight “Rulers” and choose “Tempo”. Click on the plus symbol (+) that appears next to where it says “Tempo” and then manually enter in the desired Tempo.
2) In the Pro Tools Transport window, de-select “Tempo Ruler Enable” (easily recognized as the blue Conductor icon) and either manually type in the desired tempo or use the tempo slider to set the desired tempo.

NOTES:
1) When using MIDI Beat Clock with Pro Tools as the master device, the MPC will be set to the tempo that you have Pro Tools set to.
2) When using MIDI Time Code (MTC), you will have to manually set the tempos in the MPC and Pro Tools to the same tempo.

none of this is detailed enough about the protools menus

there's other options to check or uncheck

that's why people such as myself keep havin problems

make a sticky screenshot thread or video with latest protools and jj os then it's done and over

this is how i got mtc hooked up but it doesn't align to the grid, i'm gonna try midi beat clock instead next

man... sometimes you need to dig in yourself... we cant do everything for you... they also have a tech support that you can call Digidesign .... search, and put it all together... better yet, yall paypal me $1000.00 and ill make yall a video in High Definiton online or DVD showing you step by step how to setup on a MAC and PC, a MIDI Keybaord(or a Fantom, Motif, or Triton) Pro Tools, Native Instruments Komplete 4, Reason 4, MPC 2000XL, and MPC 5000(and ill borrow a MPC 1000 and MPC 2500 from my friends)... and show yall how to sync them all together, step by step until then... do what i did, get to know and understand what each step of your equipment does... Yall are blessed that these forums are even here these days... If you know your equipment and really understand it, you can make more happen then what you expect. All this stuff people are telling yall now, I had to learn on my own how to make it work before I even knew about certain forums back in 2001...

Stop complaining, be thankful for whats been offered, and do a search to find what you cant cause its been mentioned on here several times before, maybe someone else will come along and keep saying the same things week after week. Its funny how most other people are straight except certain people, apparently you need to read up in the getting started thread or the undestanding MIDI section or go to Digidesign Forums.
